This might be a silly question--but I did a search and didn't find the info I wanted. I'm starting in Sept and am coming down to the island by myself. Unfortunately, I won't be going home for about 6 months. Since I'm flying in by myself, I know I need to be mindful of what I'm bringing with me due to the weight restrictions on baggage--so here's my question: I'm trying to bring as many clothes with me as I can, but is there any place close to Ross or in Roseau where one can buy clothes? (I assume there HAS to be..right?) I don't need brand names, just lightweight shorts and tanks. Thanks!

hmm, buy some shirts from student organizations, and some shirts from the bookstore.
Free shirts from beach bash?
You won't be called a nerd wearing them, we all wear them.
I bought one pair of shorts from the local store, broke after 4 wears.
Your shorts broke? lol
Also, unless you've made it official with the airlines or are unable to due to financial limitations (though this shouldn't be an issue - loans galore!), you will be going home for break after semester 1. Or Puerto Rico. Or some other island. I was also under the impression I'd stay on the rock for one break, but I think you'll change your mind pretty quickly :P
And don't forget to bring a suit or nice slacks/button up shirt for the white coat ceremony.

Never found a place in Portsmouth to buy decent clothes. Ditto what closter said.. buy the shirts that the students organizations always sell and bring as many t-shirts and shorts as you can with you.

would shirt, tie and nice pants suffice for the white coat ceremony? or do i really need to bring a suite.. is it good to have one on hand apart from the ceremony use?

Question:
Will catalogs deliver to the island? i.e. can I order stuff from Lands End, websites, etc. and have it delivered?
Any successful transactions?

Even if they did, you would end up spending a lot more on shipping and then a LOT more at the customs office. I always just ordered clothes online, sent them to my parents' house and picked them up over break. Trust me, you won't need to be looking your finest in Dominica, at least not the first two semesters. Shorts and t-shirts are all you'll need, especially with the heat and all the rain.

That being said, should you shy away from white clothes as if you get your laundry done and they wash them in muddy water they come back brown/beige?
Ah the very important questions of the day...

If you want to keep your whites white, either don't bring them or wash them yourself.

I think the "Ross uniform" that most people wear are:
Cheap work out shorts
Cheap t-shirts
Underwear
Sandals or sneakers.
Thats all you'll really need down here. Don't bring anything fancy here as the laundry people here are pretty harsh on the clothes. Expect to get some kinda stain or rip/tear. A few people get dressed up here, but I see no point since we are all holed away in our cubicles 90% of the time. Just bring comfortable, durable, cheap clothes and you'll be set.

I have been shopping in Roseau and there are shops that carry clothes. Since cruise ships drop by every Tuesday and much more frequently during the peak cruise season, there are shops that cater to these crowds. That being said, with the kind of schedule you will have, more than likely you won't have time to go down and look for them. Listen to ppl when they say to bring as much clothing down as you can. Keep in mind that some may be ruined by the laundry people so you need replacements and back up clothing.
US catalogues do not ship to Dominica. Either a family member has to ship it or as others have stated, bring it back when you visit home. e b a y sellers do ship to Dominica(depending on the seller).
