I have been accepted to SMU and Spartan in St. Lucia. Can anyone tell me their opinions on which to choose? I already know a resident who graduated from Spartan and got placed in Canada, which is my goal.

Go to Spartan.

Its a more established school.

And St Lucia is a better island to visit.

:-) but both are disapproved by CA, but how come less bashing on SMU and more on Spartan ? And Spartan's got a lot of successful grads, I don't get the bashing. And Spartan grads are matching in competitive fields too.

International Medical Schools Disapproved by the State of California

The Division of Licensing has formally disapproved the international medical schools listed below. Therefore, neither education completed at, nor diplomas issued by, these schools will be accepted toward meeting the requirements for training and/or licensure in this state.
If a medical school is not on this list of disapproved schools, it is either a recognized or an unrecognized medical school. Please check California's list to determine if your school is recognized by California. If a school is not on either the recognized or disapproved list, it may be a school that has not requested recognition by the Medical Board of California. Please be aware education obtained at a disapproved school is not acceptable for licensure in California.

SMU is for St. Matthews University. I think not too many people thinks about St. Martinus.

Even though St. Martinus is not on the officially disapproved list, you'll find that it is a disapproved school as far as California is concerned. Email them for confirmation.

If you mean SMU as in St. Matthews then this is a very easy choice.

IF you mean SMU as in St. Martinus it's a toss up

Spartan Health Sciences in St. Lucia seems very primitive down there. Their classrooms, facilities, technology (or lack there of) is way below the standards that one will find at St. Martinus University. If you disagree, go to www.martinus.edu (http://www.martinus.edu) and click on SMU photos/videos.

The sad thing is after more than 2 decades in business they still look primitive which leads you to think were does the money go. Sad but true.

Well I've decided to go to Spartan because I know a graduate who is doing her second year of residency in Family Practice, so at least I know it's legit. St. Martinus on the other hand, I'm sure it's fine, but because it's still so new, I'm just too nervous about it. The facilities look the same at both schools so that doesn't really affect my decision.

Spartan here I come!

I am glad you made a choice you are comfortable with. I loved the school and my time on the island (well loved is a loaded word). Island life is nothing like life in the states so get used to that idea. Classes are small and prof's are friendly so you should have a positive experience there (if those are the things you are looking for). Hope all turns out well for you. Good Luck

Good luck in Spartan

There are many successful grads from basic sciences doing rotations in Canada.

The point of these caribbean schools is your chance to write the step 1. As for going back to Canada then your MCQEE and so forth. It is doable and it has been done, just study hard and know your stuff.

For you wanting to go to Canada then get the Toronto Notes material and study all of that as that is what you will be tested on. It is even good for the steps if you should choose to write them. If you want to do rotations in the US you will have to write the Step 1. However, there are many students who do their rotations in Canada also.

Good luck
