why is it hard?
All you need is to state the truth. If you have prior research before medical school, say. If you had a scholarship, say it, if you had trouble with a subject and then succeed , say it. to be honest, I think 300 words is not enough space for me.. I received a couple awards during clinical, , presented at a conference etc. that I for sure will include.
if medical school was all good and easy for you say it. you dont need to lie and people who do will probably get cought come interview time.
if you dont have nothing to say im prety sure dr. R will say something for you.

The deans letters are generic for the most part. There is nothing you can do about the way they are written. Don't worry about it. A few students last year were very happy and impressed. Others were not- I made a correction about hospital sites where I rotated which was never changed.

What does one of these dean's letters usually say?

It is a standardized form. However, there is a section in there that the dean talks about you. In the past, every student letter looked the same. Now, the dean is giving us a chance to contribute in this section. Some students have done nothing and thus, will be generic, which there is nothing wrong. Some other students honored rotations while presenting in major conferences or at their institution and thus deserves mentioning.

are we sent a final draft to proof before it gets mailed out?

deans letters are for the most part a verbal reiteration of your grades with further commentary about your other accomplishments. Which are included anyway in your application. its not a huge deal frankly.

basically the school wants us to fill out this section so they can just cut and paste and therefore they will have less work to do.

ahhh...nope...they will edit it and rewrite it if you start lying...
nevertheless, i can see people get upset at having to do extra stuff as they like to be spoonfed....having you write a portion of the letter is only a good thing.

fine with me. i don't have much to write.
like most students, i did no research, didn't have any particular distinctions or special duties.
i tried out for the 5-star diamond platinum award, but only got 2nd runner up.

There's a 5-star diamond platinum award? I only received the application for the spent fuel rod plutonium award.

What was the point of the original question form they gave us earlier? It is basically the same thing.
