I mean one really need LORs from U.S for consideration. Since I don't think there are any rotations done in U.S. I'm not saying it's good or bad, I'm just asking b/c LORs are very important in residency application process.

Thanks

L.O.R = letter of recommendation.

It's very important when applying for residency in U.S. Most Carib schools have their clinical rotations in U.S. Students have a chance to demonstrate some skills, and to establish some kind of contacts with ppl who matter. Of course, not all, but most are able to get good L.O.R's from U.S docs. While, I have no doubts UNIBE is a very good school, priced reasonably, and will get the job done, having L.O.R's is very important. UNIBE is not a Carib school in it's traditional sence, which is set up almost exclussively for U.S and Canadian students, and teaches everything in USMLE style. It's a domicile D.R. program that also excepts North American students. And since clinicals are done in D.R. one would need to find a way to get L.O.R's from U.S doc. Thus, my question to UNIBE seniors and /or graduates: How do you guys deal with it?

Thanks

GOSH!
What a good question. Maybe you should ask some of the 400+ former Unibe students who are in various stages of Residency or private practice just how they did it, since fully 2/3 of them never did clinical rotations in the USA.
You are implying that LOR from Dominican Professors/M.D.'s are worthless in the USA.
That is insulting no matter how you slice it.
The USMLE Score and LOR get you an INVITATION for a Personal Interview.....The INTERVIEW is what will decide if your are accepted. I know of several with HIGH USMLE scores who did not get a Residency because the Program Director(s) were not impressed with their Personal Interview.

Rotations in the US in places where there are residencies could make the difference between finding a competitive spot like ENT or urology versus always giving the IMG's primary care positions; if not you may end up doing some years of preliminary service to even be considered for one. What happens is that most of these programs doesn't accept IMG's (except may be from Ross or St. Georges) to do rotations and the directors of the Dominican Universities will try to minimize this. Remember that in DR you never worked with mechanichal ventilations, ICP monitoring and all the stuff that american graduates are exposed from day one. I am a surgery resident and the voice of experience is talking here. LORs from DR doctors are indeed worthless no matter if offensive ir not it is the simple truth. The only letter that may happen to have some good impact is the dean's letter.

Then tell me. How many UNIBE grads you have in ENT, urology, CATEGORICAL surgery and so on. Gimme some FACTS not FACS.

Dear Dr. H, I believe it's a good and a very valid question to ask. And not may be, but I did get in touch with a couple of UNIBE graduates who are now practicing physicians. They both confirmed it for me. They did need LORs from U.S.A. Their D.R letters were not particularly helpful (to put it in politically correct terminology). Please do not take it so personal. My question was really meant for those who either had already gone through this process or is going through it currently. It is an issue, and to just completely dismiss it as non-existant is not really helping me much. I do not doubt that UNIBE administration has best interst for students at heart, and good intentions.
