Foreign md in 2008 or apply to us md/do for 2009? Advice please !

Hey everyone ,

I was wondering if I could get some advice on my current situation.
I wrote the April 5th MCAT ( wayy too late to apply to north american schools obviously) and scored as follows:
27Q 10BS 9VR 8PS
My overall GPA is 3.5
I graduated from a Canadian University with Distinction... a B.Sc. in Exercise Science.
I have minimal research experience and a reasonable amount of volunteer work.
My Premedical Science marks were mostly well above average ( althought I do not know my science GPA at this moment)
I applied to Sackler and St. George's for fall 2008. I'm interviewing with SGU next week. Should I be accepted, I was wondering if I should accept and go to SGU this yr in the GSP or wait and apply to US MD/DO programs for next year?

If you get accepted at SGU you go, period. Thats not to say dont apply to other schools for 2009 i think thats a good idea too. If you didnt go to SGU this year what would you do all year. Work at target while filling out all 7 pages of the applications? Go get a year done at SGU then wait for an acceptance letter. I'm at Saba and waiting around to try and get an interview at a DO school was never even an option to me. Thats just my opinion you obviously know better than I do what the best choice is. you would be foolish not to try for a US/Canadian allopathic schools. Offshore is only if you fail to get in.

I think you should just wait to see about US schools/Canadian schools. You will know if you get into a US school or waitlisted by May 2009. Starting a Carribean school Jan 2009 would you put in the same match class as if started in US/CAN school Aug 2009.

So, essentially apply for US/CAN schools now, you obviously have your paperwork stuff since you already did the MCAT. See what happens and worse case scenario start Carribean school later. I think your MCAT score is a bit low for getting into US schools as a foreigner. The few Canadians that I know that got into US schools were stellar applicants with higher scores and Gpa's than you posted, however you never know.

Also, take into consideration where you want to practice and do residency. Research the liscensure rules for Canadians from Caribbean schools before you go,thats if you want to eventuallly practice in Canada or practice or do residency in US.
