When I started we had two or three loan options, now none....when I started there were a few states that dissaproved us, now its a bunch and growing...when I started there were available clinical spots, now theres usually a wait(but not always)...Those are just a few things, how come it never goes the other way like gaining loan options, gaining states ect?...always bad news or no news..I hate to criticize my own school but its truly disheartening..

When I started we had bad professors- now SMU has probably the best basic science in the Caribbean.
When I started, we had a horrible step 1 passing rate- now it is in the 90’s.
When I started, we had only a comprehensive shelf every semester (made no sense since we were being tested for pathology and pharm in first semester) now there is subject shelfs, just like in the US.
When I started, we had a shady and biased dean…now we have a no non-sense guy.
When I started, we had no clinical quizzes, now we do.
Should I keep going?

I believe the overall of the school (since I started out in 2005) has been improved... The biggest reason why we are in a deep hole is because of the U.S. recession. ... but from an unbiased point of view, ... I have to admit, the school has improved. ... of course we still have another 20 years to catch up with Ross, SGU or AUC ...
just as a footnote, Bush signed a 162 BILLION dollar deal to fund the war in Irag... I can't help but to fantasize what if that money actually goes into education and health... then all our problems are pretty much solved.

I think SMU is headed in the right direction. Hopefully, I will still feel the same once I start in the Fall but I am trusting the opinion of those who have been there for a couple of years because they would know best.

what about the growing list of states dissapproving us because of cali? Our going to medschool and doing residency is pointless if we can't practice medicine...

you knew the issue w/ cali before you came to SMU didn't you? if not you should have done your homework and not been so irresponsible.

Its been hard times lately. I have to agree...since I've started in fall 06....we've lost more than what we've gained.

It actually seems this semester we are headed in the right direction a (lot of improvements) compared to last semester where every couple weeks there was bad news!

then there would actually be no child left behind.... but oh well... what can you expect from a child who was himself left behind...
but yea... i also agree with neel... it'd be great if we got an email telling us..."HEY! CONGRATS... WE HAVE THESE THESE THESE MORE CLINIC. SPOTS... AND THIS IS WHAT WE HAVE DONE TO GAIN BACK THE STATES WE LOST... ETC. ETC."
but nooooo.... they'd rather send us an invoice for next semester instead...

When I started I was on the way to being an MD, and I still am. Yeah, life sucks, but at least I'm getting an MD and not ringing up groceries at (one of) my old jobs. At the end of all this, I'll be an MD. A whole lot better than what I was before. 25 yrs from now, it'll just be a story to tell your kids and grandkids.

FYI...Via SGA ...
I'd like to inform you all that there will be a meeting this Friday the 4th of July @ 1:30 at the conference room where we usually meet. Please start announcing to your classes that a Student-Dean meeting has been set up for the general student population with Dean R, Dean of Clinical Sciences on Tuesday, July 8th in the reserve time (12:30-1:20) in Lecture Hall 4. At this meeting, students are encouraged to ask about what's going on in clinicals since we don't hear that much about that phase of our medical education.

When I started we had bad professors- now SMU has probably the best basic science in the Caribbean. Hmmmm....You're not far from the truth if you omit SGU, Ross, SABA, AUC, and a hand full of others!!!
When I started, we had a horrible step 1 passing rate- now it is in the 90’s. We all now know how these "pass rates" can be statistically manipulated to favor a particular school!!! Think about it, these are FOR PROFIT institutions!!!
When I started, we had no clinical quizzes, now we do. And that's a good thing?? To my knowledge, no other Carib Med School have quizzes or clinical shelf exams during the course of their clinical years therefore more time can be spent on the actual rotations themselves and preparation for Step II CK, etc.
Should I keep going? By all means please do!
BTW, I agree with Neel24!

I don't see how being FOR PROFIT has anything to do with 97% of first-time examinees passing. And about the dean thing, it's an entirely different person.
