SGU, Ross, AUC too expensive. Saba, MUA, not bad, Windsor is the least expensive. I personally couldn't care less for NY, CA approvals, and i'm not going to match-competitive field. Why should I not go to Windsor? No trolls pls. just pros and cons. Thanks.

First off, this is an AUC forum, so you're not going to get a lot of info on other schools. If 50 state approval isn't a big deal, I would look at USMLE pass rates for the schools you are considering. To me, island quality played into it. But for me, there would have been no way I would have gone to a school that didn't allow me to practice wherever in the US I wanted.

Here's the breakdown
expensive, somewhat civilized = AUC
cheap, rural = saba
expensive, rural = ross/sgu
any of these will get you where you want to be (50 state approval/high usmle pass rates)
I wouldn't risk it on some of the others that aren't as well established

If you want pros and cons about windsor, please post on their forum. This is the Ross forum!

Exactly. So long as you're not concerned about getting federal loans (only AUC, SGU, and Ross are approved for this), Saba would most likely be your best choice. Their tuition is quite low compared to some of the others, so that is a plus, as is their accreditation. Really comes down to your personal financial situation. Don't take my word for it though, keep researching, the more info the better.

Several states have adopted the CA list and it is likely that the list will grow. Thus, the impact extends beyond CA.
While I was not impressed with the CA of St. Matthews, CA approval does provide some level of quality assurance.
I expect you will have an easier time securing loans at AUC, Ross or SGU because they have federal loans. This could be important.
US medical enrollment is growing and residency placements are likely to become much more competitive over the next 4 to 5 years. Why handicap yourself by needlessly limiting your options? Also, I would not be surprised to see a number of schools fold during the next 5 years (a similar thing happened in the 1980's when several carib schools went bankrupt). You reduce the risk by attending a well established school.
Most people change their mind about future specialites about 20 times during medical school. Believe me, it is premature to select a field before you have even started.
In my opinion, you are being penny-wise and pound foolish if you select Windsor over one of the CA approved schools. If AUC, Ross and SGU are too expensive, Saba is an excellent CA-approved alternative at reasonable cost. I think it is probably the best deal (value for money) in the carib.

California approval is a big thing...includes another 5 to 10 states that follow cali
NY is important, NY houses a large number of residency programs and clinical positions

The Cali list is important. Many states have adopted the California list. If you're school is not on the Cali approval list these other states won't lisence you. Many more states are expected to follow suit and adopt the Cali list, it's cheaper than inspecting all the Carib schools themselves.
All the best.

there really is no comparison between the big four and the other schools you mention. but its your decision and career. look through the other schools forums for more info

Have you been accepted to either SGU, Ross, AUC or Saba? If not, then it does not matter what we think? Try going to the windsor forum and ask if anyone is trying to transfer to AUC, Saba, Ross or SGU, and ask why?

Sound advice, especially on the licensing issue. That's a biggie.
But, since you seem to be a bargain shopper, I think the loan question is huge. If you can't get Federal loans, you are going to be stuck paying outrageous interest rates, even if the school is "cheaper".

That's if you can get private loans. It may be worth it to look into this before deciding against schools that have access to Stafford loans.

As a general rule, you get what you pay for. Good luck.

Guys, i do see Hopeless's point. Send them away to a crappy school=they won't be able to pass the boards=more residency spots for you and for me.
On another note quality always come with a price. If whoever this person is wants to pick school based on tuition $$$ then go for it. As for me, my decision was based on the quality of the school. I didn't say I love RossU but I have to admit they gave me everything that I needed to prepare for the step and my future career.
If anyone wants to buy a book that prepares you for med school contact Marcus the Gunn pupil. He is a PBL Professor and he also claimed to be a PGY 2 radiology res. but he is on valueMD more than any of us.

This is an excellent post and one that should be heeded. People tend to be very short sighted when choosing schools.

Whatever you do, think very carefully before choosing Saba. No loans available at all. Almost as bad, we got stuck with Dr. L and Dr. W from AUC (thanks guys, its been a real treat having them here). Today our path course director stepped down because of all the crap Dr. L & Dr. W are pulling over here. And would you believe Dr. W was promoted to Dean of Students, and as of today, Dr. L is course director for pathology.

Come to Windsor. There are plenty good reasons for it. I personally like to start studying USMLE Step 1 much earlier. That's why I am coming to Windsor.
