has anyone checked their smuonline email. Just got a brand new letter from MC Dean of something clinical that if you have dont have loans on file for next semester that you wont be able to start your clinical rotations
This affects students that havent started any rotations. So if ur in 5th, taken the step, passed it, mailed in all of ur documents but dont have a loan on file, you wont be given a RAF. Hows that for rubbing more salt on the wound.
this wont affect students that are already in their rotations

huh....do you have the right to do clinicals for free?
they are just stating that you need to pay your bill before starting clinicals...policy is the same....

Dear Clinical Students,
There is a change in the process of paying for clinical invoices. the old system led to too much abuse of the system by allowing too many students taking very choice clinical rotations often without having paid their clinical debt.
the clinical invoices for Fall 2008 will be sent on or about july 1, 2008. the payments are due thirty days from the date of the invoice which is on or about august 1, 2008. Clinical students in semester 5-10 are expected to meet their obligations before RAF will be issued. Registration will open on July 21 and live RAF's will be issued to those students who have the highest status on the clinical assignment list AND have met their financial obligations.
We understand taht the expected payment date is before some students know of their loan disbursement but any student who has documentation of being approved for a loan (Davenport, private lender, etc.) and have that confirmation on file will be able to have a live RAF issued. Students who are currently in rotations extending into Fall 08 are expected to meet their invoice debt but will be allowed to continue and complete the current rotation.
Current 5th semester students who have taken the step 1 (or will do so in the near future) and believe they have achieved a passing score may register for the 6th semester and will be invoiced accordingly. Should these students not acheive a passing score, they will be reverted to a national board and their payment will be credited to spring 2009.
This is a significan change to previous semesters but this is the most fair way to get students assigned to rotations. Once again, the student is slotted for a rotation based on their standing on the clinical assignment list and by having paid their invoice. Live RAFs will not be issued to students with an outstanding balance.
sincerely,
(edited by UFTim for name) Clincal Dean

why would they send this letter if they know they will be getting a loan company. the timing of this letter is weird.

because they are indirectly telling you to get Davenport or a private lender yourself coz they're not coming up with anything.... i think between the lines they just told us that there wont be a DAP and there wont be a new lender.... but that's what i think... i hope i'm wrong

I disagree, I think it means they have too many students wanting the same clinical spots. They need another criterion to be able to decide who gets what.

i'm sorry, i wrote my post wrong.. i ment to say MAYBE that's what they are implying... i'm was not trying to say that THAT IS what they mean...
but... on the other hand... can you name ONE PERSON who was allowed to start clinical before they paid their tuition?
i just dont see how that can be possible... you can go to cayman and sit in class everyday for free without paying tuition ( i know of this one lady who would sit in out class when she had not even paid for the class )... but i dont see how you can start a rotation at a hospoital until you pay for it... so... when the school knows that we dont have loans, why would they say something like this? i mean, if the new lender is just around the corner then they should have no reason for mentally preparing us to get are money together..
this is just like the time they sent us that email telling us to apply for Health Express by the 10th or something of that month and it was in the middle of the semester.... and they also said that if you were late, you would be charged a fine... but they didnt tell us that it was because Health Express was about to drop...
so for some reason, i feel like when the school sends us emails like this, we have to kind of figure out on our own what the REAL REASON may be for what they want us to do because the school do not think that we can handle the truth...

yeah.... "we" being the basic science folk, received the same e-mail regarding the new invoice release being July 1st, with the due date for payment on them.
can't updates regarding loans, etc be as easy as sending an e-mail out like this.

There are a lot of people that didn't pay their bills (FACT). Believe it. More people are self-pay than you would believe.
I can think of a few people I know that had outstanding balances in clinicals.

so why did the school allow these students to start clinic. without paying for them? i dont understand????
i mean, even if you have a payment plan of some sort where you pay half in the begning and half in the middle or something, school can still hold your credits if you decide not pay for the second half... i know of a student in that situation.... so what i'm trying to say is that the school has full control over everything... just like a dealership... if you buy a car from me on a payment plan, you dont get the title of the car until you complete your payment ( and in this case, you dont get your transcript until you make your payment ) and if you miss your payment, do you find your car still parked outside? i dont think so... coz it'll get towed away ( and in this case, the school has the power to stop your rotations half way thru if they are organized enough )...
so i dont see where the problem is... when the school is already controling everything, how can they say that students would get by without paying for something... that's just like the dealership saying that you ran away with their car, without paying for it...

because they were lenient to students beleive it or not..in other words, they were not enforcing their own rules, i guess, for the sake of the students...(continuing their rotations)
so what smu is trying to say is that "no more mr. nice guy".

For those of us who do not have lenders, this new policy is essentially asking us to cough up $18,000 within a three month time period.
(If i remember correctly, our last tuition was due May 9th; and next semester tuition is due by Aug 1st.)

Well.... I would trust you after your surgical rotations to hold the scalpel steadily. .. beside, I dont think you're in that desperate situation to sell out an organ.

The issue is not starting rotations before paying, it's paying before receiving your RAF. You will get your name thrown out of the list for spots in December if you don't pay by Aug 1.
