Working/Jobs on or around campus?

Hey everyone, I was thinking about applying to SGU but had a couple of questions regarding the job market there. Is there any way for students (or family that comes there with them) to be able to work on or around campus to make money? Also how is the housing there? Do they usually allow pets? Thanks.

No and no... (mostly).

Your passport will be stamped "Employment Prohibited" when you enter Grenada. Students may be employed by the school as teaching assistants, typically through DES (weekly tutor), the Anatomy department (demonstrator) or Clinical Skills Office (CPR instructor). Presumably, if your Significant Other has the knowledge to teach, they, too, would be able to do so. Also, I've heard that the SOs are thinking of setting up a food stand next to the Patels and that asian family (the Upper Bus Stop) and they occasionally have SO sales (arts/crafts/food, etc.) But, generally, employment is not permitted. Wages are range in the $13-18EC/hr (I believe), so about $5-7USD/hr, really not a lot!!

As for pets, they are prohibited in campus dorms. There are some apartments and/or houses that permit animals, but you'll have to ask someone else, as I have not brought or adopted any.

I've been a supplemental instruction (SI) instructor for the past 3 years at my university and saw that SGU offers such roles for SOs. I was wondering if I could fulfill such a role if not in 1st term then in 2nd and so on?

If you are an SO, then go for it, but if you are a student, then I'm pretty sure they wouldn't hire you except for DES sessions.

ehm, so does it mean that if one decides not to go home during the holidays,that one cant get a job?:confused:

Yup. According to the International Labour Organization, unemployment in GND is 60% so jobs are reserved for locals or residents from other CARICOM (Caribbean Community) countries.

The only way to get around this and obtain a work visa, possibly, is to start a company that hires Grenadians or trains Grenadians in some new skill or trade. Getting a work visa isn't easy regardless unless a local merchant (business partner) helps it along.

That just sucks!!!:evil:, was thinking of supporting myself even if it is just a little i get, i dont want to be hounding my parents evrytime for some cash

DES used to hire a lot of SOs for part time work. My husband had a great job the whole time he was in Grenada- about 20-30 hrs per week and they payed decently. So if you have some teaching skills it's not a hopeless situation. The SOs also used to run a store and the mailroom but I guess that is no more. In St. Vincents (also no more) several of the SOs sold baked goods to students on campus - this was very popular and I believe they made a tidy profit.

As said before, unemployment in Grenada is very high, so you're unlikely to get a permit to do any kind of work unless it requires expert knowledge (like tutoring anatomy or equivalent in a non-medical field). I have heard of some people (mostly SOs) who have maintained their US jobs remotely (such as consulting, computer programming, and the like). What kind of job were you thinking of getting? Also, what kind of pay? Most workers in Grenada are making something like $5-10EC/hr (about $2-4USD/hr), which is virtually nothing compared to the >$200,000 USD/yr you'll be making as an MD in a decade. Of course, each dollar you borrow now will cost two dollars to repay (due to accumulated interest), so if you think it's worthwhile, do contact the school (in Grenada) and ask.
