Does anyone have any experience shipping stuff to Dominica from the Los Angeles area such as how much it costs, the best carrier (I know Tropical has a drop off point), etc? Also, is there a good place around here to get a barrel?

I'm from Los Angeles. Shipping from LA is going to cost you a pretty penny, especially if the package is large and heavy. Anywhere from $90-200 USD (depending on size and weight). I think barrels are uncommon from SoCal because every place I've asked for it -- I got the "don't know" look. So, I've only shipped out boxes.

For large shipments, the most affordable company to go with is AMERIJET. They have a drop-off center near downtown LA. Your shipment will probably take about a week or less to get to Dominica (Melville Hall airport). Caution: pack it tight and well.....because my boxes always arrive semi-damaged.

For fragile or extra valuable items, I'd go with DHL or Fed-Ex from LA. It's considerably more expensive but their handling is better. (The U.S. Postal Service is also another option. With priority shipping though, your package may take up to 2 weeks or longer to get here).

Best of luck!

The cheapest way from SoCal is EconoCarrib - a friend of mine shipped using them. Just know it will take a very long time - about4-6 weeks so make sure you calculate the time. Also, you will have to be the one to call to find out when it docks. They won't send a notice to the school.

How is it that Columbian drug cartels can easily send tons of cocaine to the Los Angeles/San Diego and I can't affordably send a barrel with a toaster oven, and a few extra pairs of under-roos to Dominica?

Read my previous posts regarding Amerijet. My information is about 3-5 yrs old but I would drop of an 80 to 120 lb "Rubbermade" tub (from Target) full of supplies on Friday and my daughter would have it delivered to her at her cottage at "CocoNuts" by the following Wednesday. Never paid any "customs" charges. P/U & delivery from Melville Hall Airport was never more than $20 EC. The Dominican van drivers knew how to P/U from customs without customs charges. Best wishes for success.

So Send now for September? (Do they go through the panamal canal or something. I have never heard of them, how cheap is '"cheapest" if you don't mind my asking

Week or less for Amerijet? That actaully sounds pretty good compared to what I'm been hearing. Thanks, bro.

I will probably be sending two regular large carry-on bags back with office type stuff and maybe a printers (maybe I do need more space.) Where can I get really big sturdy boxes?

Somebody should make a chart of all these things

My friend paid $90.00 USD for one barrel from LA to Dominica. You can find barrels on e-bay or call Tropical shipping and they will send you them. You can also check army supply stores. Ask for fiber drums if they don't know what barrels are. Good luck. I will ask where my friend got her barrels to ship out from LA. Call Tropical to see how much they charge if you drop it off at their drop off station. They have been pretty reliable for us and we've shipped both from the South and Canada.

that sounds really cheap, did the package have a connecting ship?

Also, are fiber drums like 55 gallon metal drums my dad used to use only that this sides are basically cardboard and the lids are metal? (can't post pics until 20 posts)

Yes - that's what they are. Doing 75 gallon barrels will save you even more money and get more stuff down.

As far as I know, this is the only place I could find barrels in Los Angeles; after days of searching and "dunno's" from every mailing, hardware, and garden center I could find.

Welcome to Apex Drum Company, Inc. (http://www.apexdrum.com/)

Best of luck. Have a nice day

P.S. Use Amerijet freight. They freight it to Miami and then it ships to Dom. Dom won't know they have it for a week and you should have it in a little less than three weeks.

thx, i was having trouble finding a place that would sell less than 25 at a time.

I saw those big plastic 45-gallon bins at walmart for about $10, can you ship things in those? Would amerijet, tropical, etc have a problem with something that is not fiber or cardboard? It actually looks stronger and I would tape it up.

People do that too. IT doesn't hold as much and the cost is probably more but it's definitely an option. Did you call Tropical to see if they would send you some barrels? E b a y has great deals too.

You have to check periodically. Maybe once a week. They have it and then it comes off. I bought mine for $10 a barrel (I bought 3) plus the shipping. It was less than $25.00 per barrel. You have some time so just check the site from time to time.
We also shipped cardboard boxes filled with stuff in addition to the three barrels. Call to see what the rates are. Ours was pretty inexpensive.
