I can't answer the first two questions but regarding the 3rd question, yes you do have to repeat the entire year. This is pretty much the same for all the Charles Medical Faculties. If you only fail one subject, then you still have to repeat the entire year, paying the tuition for that year, just to repeat one SUBJECT!!!! It's quite a hard system (but from what I hear Plsen doesn't have high attrition rates as opposed to the Charles First and Third Faculties).

How come they don't allow you to re-sit the failed exam/module over the summer period? It does seem nonsensical to make a student repeat a whole academic year for one failed exam/module, which they would, at least theoretically, be able to pass as a resit

Well the system here is in many ways pathetic. You have 3 attempts per a subject and once you've exhausted all 3 of them and stiff fail, you just have to repeat the whole year. This is how they make their income from international students.

Three attempts as in if u fail once you can resit? if not what exactly do you mean by the attempts..

Three attempts meaning you fail the first time you get another attempt...and if you fail the second time, you get a final 3rd attempt. Also the three attempts can only be taken during the specific exam period (which lasts for 4-6 weeks I think).

Have none of the schools, including Plzen dental, implemented the credit system which allows students to carry over failed courses to the following year provided that a minimum number of points have been accumulated?
I'm sure there was a thread about this with reference to Hradec dentistry and maybe a mention of Plzen too.

Passing first time around isn't too difficult - providing you don't get pissed up too much and you listen in lectures :p. Btw, anybody know what the pass rate is in the Charles?

Heard that its like 40%.. I dont know how come.
About Dentistry students say that its the toughest course. 4 or so students go to the second year..

Yeah 40% sounds as if it's about right. 4 students pass into the 2nd year ?

The Charles attrition rates are not really fixed. Usually we start off with about 107 students for general medicine and it drops down to about 45-55 students at the end of 3rd year.
The dentistry course is indeed very hard but more than 4 make it to the second year. This year I think we had about 15-20 dentistry students. Quite a few have passed and other have yet to take their finals. I think you were referring to perhaps 4 students at the end of the 3rd year but even that isn't really true.
The first three years are hardest as they weed-out as many unsuccessful students as possible but after that, it's pretty much stays constant (But it doesn't get any easier because during the 4th, 5th, and 6th years, we have the State Exams to pass in addition to final exams).

How come so many people dont make it? Even thought you get 3 shots on each exam?

Well the exams aren't that easy to begin with. Oral exams are way harder than written exams any day and it takes a lot of time to get used to them and to study in the right way. Also, we are tested on fine details that one might not think is important, but is important to that specific prof. It's definitely not easy and many people don't necessarily pass, but if you work hard throughout the semester or year and not procrastinate, I don't see how you can fail.
Also some students just give up because they haven't studied the whole year and procrastinated and partied like crazy...only to realize that they don't have time to catch up. Time management in medical school is a valuable asset as the sheer amount of reading can be overwhelming. Prague can also be very distracting in terms of night life and this is often the major problem for a lot of the students as many of them have travelled to another country for the first time (away from parents) so they like freedom more than anything (I was one of them but I never compromised my studies).

we have oral exams aswell?
Oh well im going to start studying from day one! don't want to waste my parents hard work and money!
How do you apply for accomodation? When you arrive there does the university send us to our rooms themselves?

The exam system is a bit strange here. The final exams are all oral in nature. In order to take the final exam, the prerequisite is to obtain a credit for that course (the credit can by obtained only after having passed the credit test which can be written or oral or even a slide test; it depends on the individual professor or the department and how they want to go about with the test.) For the final, in anatomy for eg. we have 3 parts: 1st part - slide test; 2nd part - cadaver dissections, and x-*** identification; 3rd part - oral exam (where you choose one card out of a box, each card having 3 questions; also you have to pass one part of the exam to get to the next and after the 1st part, they divide students into two groups where the first group will take the 2nd part first and the second group will take the 3rd part first and then they rotate). For histo. we have 2 parts: 1st part: oral exam (again you choose a card from the box of cards, each card having 3 questions - one from general histology, one from particular histology and one from embryology); 2nd part: microscopic slide test.
Regarding accomodation, the University allots the students to a specific dorm (there are tons of them out of which only 3 or 4 are medical dorms; but you can eventually switch to a non-medical dorm too). I wouldn't really recommend living in a dorm mainly because all of them are really far away and the facilities are not good at all (except for three of the dorms: Kolej Komenskeho, Kolej Kajetanka and Kolej Hostivar). Kolej Komenskeho is the best out of the 3 but has tons and tons of distractions as the American exchange students come every semester from the US and are allotted to that dorm. The other two dorms are really far (one in Prague 6 just like Kolej Komenskeho and one in Prague 10). I would recommend that you get an apartment after a couple of months or after a semester with a friend. You will be able to study better and save more time in traveling everyday.

Ahh it does sound soo complicated. If the exam system is so complicated, imagine the actual exams  ..
And how far would be the dorms from Pilsen. Can you not walk from uni to your dorm?

Hey again,
I'm sorry I completely forgot that you were going to Pilsen Faculty of Medicine. The exam policy I mentioned is only for the 1st faculty but in general all faculties do have oral final exams (and the same picking the cards system) and credit tests so I wouldn't be surprised if the system were any different but I do know that Plsen has much lower attrition rates as opposed to the 1st and the 3rd faculties in Prague.
I don't really know about the dorms in Plsen but I don't think they would be too far away because Plsen is a smaller city and it's university buildings are new so you might have much better access to the university and even better dorms. I've heard it's quite a nice place (it is the home of Pilsner Urquell after all) and it's also quite diversified.
Also Plsen doesn't have a few subjects that we do in Charles like medical informatics, medical greco-latin terminology. So I should tell you that in case you are planning on transferring to Prague in the future, you will have to take this classes (they're not hard ofcourse; but latin is quite extensive).

Thank a lot and have a good day!

Hi Raymond
I studied Biology in a week by myself. Physics and chemisttry i did for leaving Certificate.
Thing is Everything they gave me in Exam was ou of course! Even physics and chemistry.
Best thing is study from british A Level books. Biology questions were very hard and i guessed most of them.
In Physics they asked mainly about calculating rate of flow of blood. Gravitation and charges.
In chemistry they asked about calculating the Masses atomic masses molecular masses, Oxidation numbers and acids/bases.
Some questions in biology were Multiple choice Questions but Phy/Chem were all theory. Even though they say its M.C.Q but its not!

Well in Czech Republic, MCQ take on a literal meaning i.e. "multiple choice"...so there can be more than 1 or 2 or 3 answers or all could be correct. This is one of the hardest tests and are quite tricky.
Anyways, I'm sorry again. I'm not sure if the Dentistry program has the same courses (I don't think they do). Also the Plsen dentistry program is quite good and they don't have the high attrition rates. The Charles First Fac. dentistry program is the worst because it has the highest attrition rates as it's one of the best in Europe. But essentially, all the Charles programs are quite good and are up to a high standard.

You're welcome. And I'll try and find out more stuff about Plzen because I know two students in their 4th year in the First Fac. who transferred from Plzen.
