A friend of mine told me that he was asked several questions on Bile Duct obstruction and the location of the obstruction. Does anybody have any information about what the signs and symptoms are for each type of obstruction???????????

the signs and symptoms will be more or less the same. I think those questions will concentrate more on the type of billirubin you'll have conjugated or non or both. Look up Jaundice and the different causes of Jaundice for more info.

all would have obstructive jaundice, or conjugated hyperbilirubinemia or direct hyperbilirubenemia.
1) gall stones,
2) you mean the common bile duct? then you'd have pale or "clay" colored stools, because no bile is flowing to the GIT.
3) look it up yourself that's how you learn.
1. Cystic duct obstruction>> Cholecystitis (pain for hours to several days), RUQ, bile is still going from common duct, so you have normal colored stools, but some steatorhea, because bile is not released upon fat stimulation, timing is off.
2. Common bile duct obstruction>>
A. Obstructive jaundice>> conjugated bilirubinemia>> dark urine (conjug. is water soluble>> kidney), and clay colored stools (no bile hitting duoden.)
B. Cholangitis (ascending inflamation of whole biliary tree)>> RUQ pain.
3. Don't know which your "other duct" is, but maybe Hepatic duct?
That is not very common, rarely comes up in clinicals or questions, but it would cause same as Common bile duct obstruction, becaue Gall bladder only holds a few ounces of bile, good for maybe 1-2 meals. But it would not cause Cholecystits pain or Cholangitis pain.
4. Don't forget stones at the ampulla or Odi, those are the MCC of Pancreatitis.
5. Cholecystitis tends to cause nocturnal pain, other biliary issues do not.
6. Look up Charcot's Triad about Choledocholiathis (common bile duct stone)
HOpe I am right, know I'm exactly right or very close, and you can look it up and learn and correct me otherwise.
