Hey GirlyGirl, there is a good thread in the SGU forum on books to study from for Step I, it has a lot of tips as far as which books are worth it and which are a waste of time and you should skip. The thread is only 4 pages, and it has good advice (the link is below). I basically put up everything I did to get 257/99...without taking a Kaplan course. If you have anymore questions feel free to PM me

Hey,
I just took step 1 this past week. All you really need are the Kaplan lecture notes (I used the 2006-07 version), I used that and the lecture videos (they correspond to each other exactly) for Path and biochem only. I used the lecture notes as a supplement for micro/immuno and genetics. Otherwise, I mainly used firstaid as the main book.
Important thing... USMLE WORLD!!!! You need to do ALL of the questions and READ READ READ the answer explanations and take notes (which I did in FirstAid). 90% of what I saw (almost) was covered by these 3 sources in one way or another. Unfortunately, I can't tell you more than that (b/c this is as public forum and I will get in deep doo doo).
Oh I did use High Yield Neuroanatomy, Behavioral Sciences, and Biostatistics. However, I mainly used them as supplementary sources to what First Aid didn't explain and just briefly mention (which is a lot of First Aid which is why you need supplementary sources).
Again... USMLEWORLD prepares you the best out of all of these sources! TRUST ME!

Personally, I'm a huge fan of "Step Up to USMLE Step 1." When you check it out on the bookshelves, don't be mislead by how much thicker "First Aid" appears to be - unlike "First Aid," it doesn't contain an extra 100+ pages of ads and pointless filler.
Oh, and by the way, I know what ya mean when it comes to finances running out - unfortunately, not all of us out there have the means (or Mommy & Daddy's means) to be so nonchalant about affording a lowly "couple grand" for a Kaplan course.
Anyway, best of luck to you!

Just wanted to tell everybody that I just picked up Kaplan's new "medEssentials" book on Amazon.com a couple of days ago, and I got it for a really good price. I just looked at their site again and it's still marked down to $32.97 (34% off) plus free shipping. I was kind of surprised to even find it that cheap because it's a brand new book for 2008, and Kaplan doesn't even have it on sale thru their own website.
Anyway, I started using it earlier today, and so far it seems pretty good and it's definitely more comprehensive and integrative than "First Aid." Also, it's organized into both discipline (aka. subject) AND systems-based approaches. Since my med school's curriculum was discipline-based, I've had a little bit of difficulty getting accustomed to the exclusively systems-based approach found in most of the new review books on the market - at least this book gives me a choice.
Also, this book also has online access with a bunch of interactive study materials, quizzes and flashcards. I've used Kaplan's ridiculously expensive online Qreview in the past, and for the money, this book's online material seems like a MUCH better deal.
Just thought I'd share! (And P.S., I don't work for Kaplan or Amazon even tho' it seems like I'm plugging for them both - LOL!)
