Are all of your block exams on the same day? Ex. Neuro, Path 1, Mirco 1 and Path 1. Do you do any work or learning within the hospitals during basic sciences? Can anyone elaborate on the overall quality of teach especially the four classes listed?

No, it's 2 a day. Mon and Tue like once a month are blocks. If you have a different schedule you tell the dean but the Handbook says you don't take more than 2 exams per day.

Not 'til 4th semester when you shadow docs maybe once a week, and then during ICM in 5th semester
Can anyone elaborate on the overall quality of teach especially the four classes listed?
Neuro: my fave prof ever. Charismatic, works hard, explains and explains and you won't need a text book coz his notes are so thorough with pics and all.
Pharm: he don't take crap from nobody. He forces us to pay attention coz he randomly picks on pple but his exams are to the point and no surprises
Path 1: (get Robbins and the review qn book). He's so boring, but you gotta pay attention.
Micro: She's a sweetheart, to the point, exams clear-cut and dry, no surprises.
All of these profs have pretty good power-points that are thorough (except path) and the school records lectures on video/audio for you to watch or listen to at home.

Realize though that even though you can view/listen lectures at home, SMU still has a strict attendance rule where you have to attend 80% of a particular class or you fail the class. Profs pass around a sign-in sheet and students sign their name to get credit for having attended the class.

What Camry says is accurate. Except, I don't have the Robbins Path book. I'm just using the notes, BRS, and Kaplan book. About the shadowing...I'm glad they don't have us doing stuff in the hospitals during first, second, and third semesters. It takes 3 semesters before you really know enough for the shadowing to be worthwhile. Build the foundation first, then frame the house.

two exams in one day, you may even have three, due to Neuro being a 2nd semester class.... but I did see on the last block exam schedule that if you have 3 in one day to go and speak with the Dean about it.

Neuro - my favorite class in 2nd semester. Very tough class, and you can't fall behind or else you assume the fetal position and sob uncontrollably when you get the exam. No book is needed. His notes are more than enough for you. Extremely thorough and detailed.
Path 1 - my favorite class this semester, I actually really like this Professor and his lectures don't bore me one bit. The only thing that annoyed me was when class time would be over, and then he would say "so let's review, what we talked about today" and then talk another 10 minutes basically re-stating everything that he already just got done saying, so we'd run into our next class schedule and people wouldn't get a bathroom break, or go and buy a Jamaican Patty. We love our 10 minute breaks here :D, if a Professor cuts into our break time all rules are off. :twisted:This is another one of those classes that you need to keep up with and study like mad man. I don't use Robbins, I have Goljans Rapid Review and the Robbins Qbook. The Rapid Review Goljan book is awesome, easy to read, and goes along perfectly with the lectures giving me another perspective and understanding of the assigned lectures. The Robbins Qbook is awesome to have also, so that you can get the hang of how questions may be asked.
Pharm 1 - Very good Professors, and extremely interactive. If you are not paying attention in class and listen to the Professor, you will once again assume the fetal position when the the Professor walks up to you and has you answer one of his questions.
Micro 1 - Very nice Professor, this class is a lot of strict memorization. Micro made ridiculously simple really helps me out with this class also.

I agree with all statements above.
but I dont know, i didnt like the neuro professor at all. He goes off on so many tangents. I think its due to his charisma that everyone loves him.
I personally dont want a guru as a professor. Giving us advice on how to function better in life. Save it for the "special session" and leave it out of the class room.
But his notes are all you need, well a neuro atlas would also help you out.

i like the neuro prof. but i dont like how he teaches. he gives you pretty much just a packet to memorize. the notes really have no direction to them at all. he is very scattered. Its pretty impossible to follow him in any textbook in case you dont understand him and want to look it up for another explanation. hes a very good guy but i just dont like his teaching style to disorganized for my taste. Drs. M and L (anatomy) are great because they are so organized they are easy to follow and easy to look things up if you need any further clarification. maybe its because i cant stand neuro to begin with

What's ur secret? Seriously. Honestly. I need a No-doze pill or Red-Bull to stay awake. Maybe amphetamine.

Lol! You too? He gets done at 2.25 and talks for 10 minutes 'til 2.35. I'm like, you should have just walked out at 2.25
I actually like Patho the subject itself. I'm just used to the ever entertaining Dr S.

I don't find Path boring at all. I'll agree that his voice is kind of monotone but other than that he is good at presenting the material. Micro is the class that makes me want to cut my wrists. Remember, vertical not horizontal.

LOL.... I hear ya. But I'd rather have a low monotone voice from a Professor, rather than a high pitched shriek any day.

Medschools should teach more than just hard core medical facts and science.... they should also teach us the physicianship and how to honor the profession once we get the degree. ....one of the reasons why we have sloppy medical doctors and doctors whom the patients just wanna slap in the face is because the schools made them into be doctors and not taught them how to be a doctor.
Just my 2 cents ..... no offense intended :)

I def agree with your statement. Med schools should def teach doctors the art of medicine along with the science of medicine.
But i dont see how Dr S, the neuro professor teaches us this.
His main fact of life is. To live freely without stress is the most beautiful life possible. He says dont worry be happy.

It's difficult to teach the art of medicine. To me, that is something that only comes with experience.

He's our daddy! Don't let your mind control you- don't write it's in the notes- do you want to read that? You will never be intelligent..... come on! I just told you.... my goodness... I don't know what else I can do... that is why you don't do well...
He needs a second job where pple come to him for advice so he can let out that guru outlet.
