Just my observation, but do pple who work here shower in lemon juice every morning? Some of them are so sour! We got some real nice bus drivers, but some of them are out-right nasty, telling you not to waste their "time" and give them the money earlier on. Others start driving before you even sit down. At the bank, some clerks look up at me like I'm bothering them while they're busy "working" and they won't even look up- I'm like - aren't you a teller? At the grocery store the cashier gave me an attitude and told me I needed to take my own groceries out of the little basket. And stood there and told me to pack my own groceries in the bag. I worked as a cashier myself before and I just don't get it. One time an American tourist went off on the cashier. I wish I could too but since the island is so small I'm too smart/ scared to do that.
I just had to let that out- who's doing who a favor? Am I paying for business or am I begging for free help?

This is hilarious. I am from a small town where everyone is hard working and overall courteous. When I was in NYC, I was so SHOCKED. I went to stores and cashiers were texting (phone text) instead of ringing me, after a few minutes, they acted like I was interrupted them!!!! I mean they put things in the bag, text, get the money, text..etc..
I found my experience in nyc very disturbing. I thought people in cayman where sowhat lazy, but people un NY feel entitle.

oh man, sounds like you're getting island fever. my wife and i had that for a while when we were there. hang in there, it will be over soon enough, and you will wish you were back there. only this time, the Caymanian cranks won't get to you because you'll be an American doctor who can tell people what to do. <<sigh>>

Hey SMU lay off New Yorkers we are busy ppl and we are always multitasking. Ok I admit the texting while you wait is pretty rude but you won't find that in all places. You might have walked into a bodega (corner store ) or something.

I'm from NYC and i went through the same thing on the island that camryllionaire describe. People in nyc wanna work and make money. I dont know where you went smu79.
It seems like people in cayman dont care about money. they hardly work and when they do get work they seem upset about it.
I had to approach 3 carpenters to come to my house to fix a closet. Imagine that. One didnt wanna come, one wanted to come but never came, and finally the 3rd one came and was happy about receiving extra income.
I love it when workers at stores in cayman gave me attitude cause I required them to do their job.
some advice camryllionaire just be friendly with the people. A big smile and a flirtatious grin with a lady, or some manly talk with man will go a long way.

staples i would def give you. I hate the service at staples. Normally when i;ve been to best buy i've been swarmed by workers.
so you aint going to rank 28% of the nation's residency programs which are also the most welcoming of IMG's, good luck to you bud

Azul has that NYC hustle going that makes us the amazing glorious ppl that we really are. ;)Yeah I could see the techie geeks at Best Buy texting and working at the same time. I have seen that behaviour everywhere. New York is not for the light hearted and if you don't like fire get out of that kitchen for sure LOL. It's takes a certain personality to be able to survive in NYC especially during residency. NYC hospitals can wear u down like you would not believe. SMU79 I appreciate your candor though. You are right NY is not for everyone. I have a few friends who are from NYC and matched in NYC and they are doing fine but then again they are used to and understand the anxiety and fast paced that only native New Yorkers can understand. Ok by now you are fed up with my ranting about how wonderful we are and let me convince you that we are truly nice people. :p Brooklyn lives on everyday all day.

LOL.... this is hilarious...
my wife has this so-called "island fever". I fear for the safety of some of the workers with my wife. We stayed here for the last break and I see we made a bad decision. My sweet/shy petite wife has now turned into a Wolverine.
We were at Fosters yesterday and the clerk told my wife to bag our groceries... I was holding my son and all I could do was clinch my teeth and brace for impact. My wife just looked her square in the eye and said "I don't think so!".
We then came home and I booked us a flight to go home over the next break.
On another story..... I took a taxi one time and my driver was an absolute assassin. First time in my life that I wanted to apply the sleeper hold on somebody. A person (who happened to be an SMU student, because I could tell by the white polo) had cut my taxi driver off, and he went absolutely crazy over it. He stuck his head outside the window, and was yelling at this guy, "who do you think you are", "how would you like it if I drove like that in your country!". LOL..... then he would drive "RIGHT" up behind this guys bumper and continue to yell out the window. Then.... he would keep "gunning" the engine as if he was threatening to hit the car, as my taxi "lunges" forward every time he guns it.
When we finally got to my place, I let it all out.... telling him how crazy he is, and how lucky he was that I was by myself, because if I would have had my two sons with me I would have went crazy.....
little does he know I was contemplating "should I give this guy the Stone Cold Stunner, or should I just punch him in the neck"
Now that I look back on it, I can't help but to laugh ;)

Lets start a list of where people are really rude on cayman.
The older heavy set woman with short hair that works at marquee cinema. She pretty much yelled at me for buying a ticket while she was on the phone.
numerous waitresses have been seriously rude.
Century 21. A bunch of shady people there.
lol the front desk workers at school. Talk about incompetent and always taking breaks.
Custom officers that work at the post office. WOW try to get them to smile. They feel that we owe them something because smu only brings over 10 million dollars a year to the cayman economy.

OMG this thread is hilarious and yes MDPLZz those freaking NY rats are a beast they just climb on the platform with their muscular body and expect you to get out of the way for them. Complete bullies
WSUCougar your wife sounds like an absolute riot and I pray that she does not hurt someone and that you guys are still there when I arrive in September (If I can get a loan :p)
As far at the Caribbean goes it is what it is. People in the Caribbean are so laid back why do you think people go there to vacation not really to go to school. So its just a matter of getting used to the culture remember you are not in the US and even in the US yes small towns and cities alike there are plenty of Debbie Downers that seem like they are PMSING all month long and don't want to deal with customers.
Cougar that cab ride sound just like the yellow cab rides in NY but yeap I hear you that if my son was in the car with me I would let his crazy carib butt know whats really on my mind. Unbelievable.
Just be nice to the people and they won't seem so embittered you are in their country so respect is due. The worse is dealing with snooty self entitled Americans in other countries. It is highly annoying so I can see where they just loose it as well.

It's okay to rant on here about Cayman. We've all been there. It's a great island, but it is a Caribbean island and moves like one. I couldn't wait to go somewhere and get good service again. I found the key to getting good service everywhere was to know everyone. You're in one area of a small island for 2 years. I got excellent service by the end of my second year because I was uber nice to everyone from day one and worked hard to know the people at Subway, Quizno's, Foster's, the coffeeshop, etc., etc. The post office is always going to be bad. LOL
On another note (no not about NYC b/c this is a Cayman thread), I find that a lot of the Caymanians resent SMU students because they see as locusts. Of course, there have been a lot of very rude and entitled students down there, which caused a lot of Caymanians to form stereotypes about the students.

I have been here 6 years and in general, people are very friendly. Does this mean you will not be abused, nope. A smile does get you a long way.
You cannot compare caribbean islands people with Newyorkers, Parisians, Londoners, etc... They are all stressed out and you will be one of their stress relief for the day
:)

I definitely agree. Of course, you don't have to wear a white polo shirt. ;)
There is some discrimination and sometimes bad attitude that is presented against it.

Yeah to your credit too the 2 ladies that work at the front desk are friendly and always help me with directions to places, ideas for restaurants.
It's just some things I notice that would have gotten me fired on the spot are kinda the norm over here. The weirdest thing I ever saw was this bus driver that had her baby in the front seat next to her without a CAR SEAT or SEAT BELT!!! The baby was playing with a doll and the lady was driving with one hand and stabilizing her toddler (maybe 2 y/o at he most) with the other.

I do not wear a white pollo shirt and it is true that in the past, some rotten apples have given a bad taste to some locals.
It is unfortunate that the bad 1% gives a bad name for the other nice 99%....
I believe the worst of Cayman attitude is to be seen at the Cinema. 6 months to 2 years old kids in PG-13/R movies, cell phones ringing left right and center..... drives me crazy.
Happy Friday the 13th.
PS: Thank you for Emma and Latoya, i will relay.

I am not sure if they wrap them as well. This may be the first time you are thankful for the US Postal service. When I got there, it took me several weeks to figure out that there were no mailboxes. 6) The drive to Dominoes in West Bay is fun, and sort of scary, on a late Sunday night. 7) I miss driving through Hell every Sunday on my way to church.
