Hey everyone, I'm starting in May 2004 so time is a ticking.

Just a question for those who are currently in 1st semester or who have already been through it.

Do you need all of the required textbooks for the semester (I've been in a lot of courses where the required texts are worthless).
Also, which of the recommended texts are actually helpful - and therefore that I should purchase.

Thanks a lot

Matt

You need to buy a copy of Moore for anatomy. There are plenty of copies of Grant's Dissector in the library that you can check out. I didn't use mine very much. The BRS for Gross Anatomy is VERY helpful. If you can afford it, buy an anatomy atlas with actual photographs of dissections (Netter's is just illustrations, but is also necessary.) I found the histo books useless. I read the first chapter in Concise Histo and haven't picked it up since. I've only briefly flipped through the histo atlas. Everything you need to know for histo is in the power point slides. If you need further explanation, there are some good books in the library.

Anatomy - Netter atlas is a MUST!!!
Grant's dissector - someone else will have it so forget about it
Moore's Clinical Anatomy - EXCELLENT...esp. if this is you first time learning all this.
BRS Anatomy - nice review stuff
Bottom line: Dr. Raja tells you everything you gotta know in class and the reviews...he is excellent at teaching!!! Dr. Samsam is good too and his powerpoints have everything you'll need.

Embryology - forget about the book; there may be one or two things you need to look up the whole semester because Dr. Raja is so good at teaching it in class...so just go to the library and read about it real quick.

Histology - Dr. Ochoa has everything he'll test on in his powerpoints. And Dr. Flay has the best powerpoint notes I've ever had. So bottomline, forget about the textbook.

hope that helps...trust me on this.

Well, the Histology book helped me to have a glace of the upcoming material. A good atlas is a MUST to enjoy the glass slide sessions, which are the most enjoyable part of the course.
