Hi I have been seeing alot about having to save up money to stay on the island while studying for step 1 .... Can we take step 1 in our home state or does it have to be taken at AUC? I was hoping to be able to go home while studying to save money so any info would be helpfull!!
I am not sure where you got that information but there is absolutely no truth to it. Everyone at AUC usually goes home to study for step one and then takes the exam at a testing center in their home state.
There are some students that stay on the island to study for step one but that is entirely their choice. These guys usually go to Puerto Rico or back to their home state to take the exam.
Hope this sets your mind at ease

I think what you are referring to are comments towards those who don't have family to mooch :P off of...so they need to be aware to save up the cash.

" those who don't have family to mooch off of"
guess i've been out of my parents house so long i had forgotten what it was like...ahhh the days of no bills. so i guess if you can go back to mommie and daddy's place, and none of your sibblings have taken down your brittney spears and justin posters taking over your room you can live there for a few months. i guess it applies to us old people with responsabilities and mortgage payements.... man i'm old

We are looking at MI as a possible clinical site for us...exactly what do you mean by awful winters? We're from Hawaii, are we going to see the sun at all? Will we freeze to death? And, most importantly, will we see the sun at all?

Well clinical sites are in the east side of the state where the weather isn't as harsh as it is here! You will see more sun than we do here but don't expect much!! My parents moved home from Hawaii to care for my kids while I went back to school and they can't wait to go back and I am considering a move that way myself. On this side of the state we typicaly get about 120 inches of snow between anytime after Sept until occasionaly in late April or early May. We don't see much sum here .... they say we are second in cloudiness only behind Seattle. Now the summers on this side of the state are beautiful somewhat Hawaii like weather but on the east side typically hot and humid. And the easy side of the state can get spring and summer tornados depending on where you are. Winter weather temps are generally on the low 20's during the day and around 0 at night not including wind chills. Inthe summer temps tend to be inthe 80-90 range and 60-70ish at night again depending.
To give you a weather example in the last 10 days we have had temps close to 70 and as low as 28 during the day and as warm as 40 and cold as 20 at night.

Hey, quit worrying about the weather... you know you'll love the adventure of it all... just another party! Only there won't be pools for us to push you into.. so watch out for snowballs coming your way! he he! Alohaaaaa!

I live like 10 minutes away from Providence, which is the main clinical site for AUC here in MI. To tell you the truth, winters are no fun, but summers are great. But in my opinion, 4 month summer is not a good enough reason to go through the horrible winters. It snows between September-March. August is when everyone start hating MI and March is when the same people start saying countless good things about MI. I'm never gonna come back here even though almost everyone of my family members are right here. Driving is horrible during snow days and it snows heavily atleast once every week. Every time it snows, it leaves enough snow on the roads to trouble you for the next one week. Go figure..
PS: This is how I feel about it, but others might enjoy it.
Cheers....

I agree that driving in the snow is a pain but here they clear the raods pretty good even after big snow storms ...... it usually takes 10+ inches over night to close schools. I drive 50 miles one way to school and I only didn't go in twice this year and that was due to visability not slippery roads. I have lived all my years here and I am ready to live somewhere that I don't freeze my a$$ off for 6 months a year. The summers are great but it doesn't make up for the cold and snow!!!!!! If you like to ski and snowmobile then Michigan is for you.

If only the transplants in Colorado knew that so MY state wouldn't be so crowded! But what can I say... Colorado is the place to be!

Let's see now, tornadoes, heavy snow weekly, almost as cloudy as Seattle...none of which I have EVER experienced...
Bring it on. I'm ready  I think
By the way, it's a good thing you aren't a travel agent Baditude...
Just kidding, thanks for telling it to me straight. Excuse me while I go soak up all the vitamin D that I can now. 8)
...and I look forward to the snowball fights, Trish. Especially if you plan on using your hubby as a shield

Don't get me wrong Michigan has some great qualities but when you are comparing Hawaii, which I have visited twice, to Michigan I lose all sense of a positive view! :) I loved Hawaii and it is my dream to be able to live there but then reality strikes and I look out the window and see snow UGH  But I can see if you have never expereinced the four seasons you will enjoy your time here! As much as I hate snow I love the way it looks on the trees and I look forward to the first big snowstorm of the year but after several months of it I have had enough!! Over on the east side of the state they don't get much snow and they do get quite a bit of sun so don't worry!!! If you get time while here make a trip during the summer over to the Lake Michigna shore and see the difference! I will see if I can dig up some photos I have of the beach during summer and winter for you to see!!
