In today's Chicago Tribune, the business section reported that Michael Reese hospital in Chicago is planned to be shut down as early as this fall to make way for its destruction and removal prior to the 2016 Olympics. I guess it was one of the recommendations of the Olympic Committee to tear down decrepit buildings in order to have a valid stake at the opportunity to hold the Olympics in Chicago. Well there you go guys, nothing says our medical education is expendible in the name of sport as much as this!

Yeah, a lot of hospitals like Michael Reese are losing money like crazy. When I was up there at Mt. Sinai I saw in the Tribune that one or two other small, decrepit, and cost inefficient hospitals were closing.
I think one was St. ******* in Blue Island.
It's tough when you're an inner city hospital and your patients all rely on governement aid or don't pay at all, which is mostly the case. All that pro bono work isn't good for the bottom line.
Michael Reese's impending closure was known about some time ago. They didn't participate in the match for their internal medicine program this year. The private group that own's MRH has a history of sucking money out of hospitals(what I heard when i did rotations their) and then putting it into their other developments. The group is reported to make a handsome profit b/c the land is reportedly is worth $65million(they bought it for $20+million) if the city or developers buys it to build for the olympics.

How many students were rotating through Michael Reese?
It has fallen off alot as the census has gone down. But last fall they had 8 IM core people, 6 OB/GYn(not sure), 15-20 IM elective people

Well then, I don't think this should affect us too much. This news just caught me off guard this morning as I was eating my breakfast right before I was set to take the UW assessment. I recognized the name of the hospital and I knew that was one of our sites. No matter how much I'd like to stay close to home for rotations, the quality of the learning environment is much more important.
