Hi everyone! Thanks for reading. Well, I had a few quick questions. I am interested in attending SMU and would like to know if you guys think I could get in. So far, I work as a pharmacist full time and graduated last year, had about a 3.25 in school but have not taken the MCATs. Is the MCATs needed to gain admission to SMU? I've been to Cayman before and that is a pretty nice island-- seems like one of the better ones in the carribean. Anyways, I really don't have much "volunteer" clinical experience except what I did in school for a year as part of my program and currently work full time. What do you think? Any advice?

Score 20+ on the MCAT and there won't be a problem. Go get yourself some volunteer experience in a clinical setting, do some shadowing to see if you will really like it. Better be sure cuz it's an expensive mistake to make.

hey, first grand cayman is the nicest island in the carribean, most first world etc. its like living in a slow paced miami almost. The school im a second semester and really like it, the professors are wonderful, good teachers always willing to help. The education is very good SMU prepared me and the people i studied with very well to do excellent on our shelf exams. As for getting in im pretty sure you need the MCAT, but just take it and you will get in. SMU pretty much takes everyone. we have several people i know personally in my class that were admitted with GPA below 3.0 and some with MCAT scores in the mid teens. If i were you i would apply to SMU (you will get in), SGU, AUC and Ross (if you think you can take dominica).
The downside to SMU we dont have federal loans or any loans right now, dissaproved by cali and a few other states due to Cali dissaproval. the administration is downright awful. never tell the truth or the full story, can never get a straight answer. this is only if you can manage to get anyone on the phone. any more questions you have about SMU feel free to PM me take care

i wouldnt want to go thru to another 4 years of school if i was already making almost 100K... pharmacists get paid good...

Then he/she won't have to worry too much about getting loans.

If a person is about money, sure they'd agree with you, but if they are about fulfilling goals and feeling satisfied, they'd think quite the opposite.

I think the davenport BBA/MBA works really well for someone who needs loans.....it is going to get harder as far as studying, but doable .....dont ya think?

I only advise it if you are already skin deep without the financial means to continue. I am ashamed to have had to resort to this sort of plan. I do not think it is wise to risk failure of one program or the other just to pay for SMU's tuition. Try to go to SGU, Ross, or AUC, as they have federal loans.

Your GPA is good to get straight in here. The MCAT "IS" required, just take it and you'll get in. I know of quite a few people who got 16-18 and got in here with no problem.
As far as islands go, Grand Cayman is by far the best choice as far as environment goes. But you will pay for it with the high cost of living, etc.
Basic Science Curriculum here is awesome. The professors are awesome and are willing to hold extra classes whenever you want and really focus on preparing you for the step. Just make sure you research every aspect involved with every school, and go from there. Apply to multiple places and go from there.
I too am doing the Davenport program. Sometimes I get bogged down with busy work from the program from trying to study for Block Exams. But for the most part you can just plan ahead and overcome this obstacle. I have been in the program from day one and chose to do the program without taking in the financial aspect of it. Now...... obviously I am very happy I can get these loans from Davenport to help us out. But.... there is no way that the money from Davenport could cover SMU tuition and living expenses. You get $7800 after tuition from Davenport each semester. I have to agree that I was a little annoyed last semester by how the school was instructing the students to enroll in the MBA program to pay for tuition, but......... what can you do.

if you have the option go to SGU or AUC. Then consider SMU. Go take the mcat tomorrow. With your GPA, your mcat score is pretty much a formality.

Or you could study real hard for the MCAT, knock the snot out of it, and have an outside shot at a DO school if you don't mind that route. You have several options, research them and pick the one that suits you best.

yeah you could try to get into a DO school you would have a good shot, if you have extra cirriculars and experience with a DO.
Yes, the school lied. Tuition assistance was suppose to pay for tuition and fees. however it did not cover all tuition and fees. They never answer any questions directly especially JM who i have spoken to on the phone and in person, he makes you want to choke him with his seemingly scripted answers and lack of candor. the whole Admin is a joke the best they can do is say do davenport to come to med school so they can make more money off of us while we waste our time doing a ** MBA program that will more than likely be worthless to us. Profs are amazing though best part of SMU

Getting in to these schools is the easy part (as long as you got good credit and a pulse), getting out.....well thats another story
So whatever decision that you make, just remember to keep your head in the books and work hard because thats the only thing that you can control....

I disagree, getting in and staying in is the hard part. Good credit is hard to come by and in this economy it sometimes still doesn't help you secure the finances.
Jacket, cut the admin some slack. They may not give you any answers because they don't have any to give. They are working on getting sources of funding. I'm not much of a business man but even I can tell that the DAP is a bad business move for the school. Getting paid with their own money? That's why they are afraid to shell out the full amount. Try to be patient, the economy will turn around (hopefully) and people won't have to try so hard to find money.

okie so heres the real real: if u have 3.25 u have nothing to worry about. A friend of mine had the same GPA and no MCATs....he got partial acception under the conditions that he takes his MCAT and gets atleast a SIX!
no joke..

I'd be ticked off if they made me fork over $200+ if I only needed a six. What's the point of taking it?

I hope the administrator was being facetious when he/she said that: "Geez, just make a 6."

If its so easy to get in SMU, why is their attrition rate so much lower than Ross's. It seems like if they were letting just anyone in...more people would be failing out.

I don't know Ross's rate but smu graduation rate is like 60%. Ross is much bigger too, I hear like 300+ per semester so perhaps that affects their numbers as well. All I know is the only number I care about is numero uno. If I go to a school with a 99% passing rate and I'm the 1% that drops out, not good. If I go to a school with 40% drop-out rate and I'm the 60% that passes, very good.
