Hi Hopefulmd123,
Congrats on getting in! I am applying and have some questions for you.
1. When did you apply?
2. Was your first choice Jan09'?
I am wondering if it is still sensible to apply for sept08' round seeing that Jan09' is already filling up. Maybe I will see you in Jan09!
Thanks!

ill answer for you:
Yes, it is still sensible to apply for Sept 2008. From what I hear, if the class is full, they will defer you to Jan 09 anyway, so you might as well try!

You can try for September, but that's cutting it close. If you get everything in and don't make it in time for the Fall class, they'll just roll you over into the January class.

I sent in my application information in early April and didn't get all of my documents (letters of recommendation) in until mid May. Upon receipt of all of my documents, I waited three weeks until I got notice that I was accepted. January 09 was my first choice because I felt I would have a better chance with more spots open plus I wanted some time off from school to travel, work, enjoy life. I feel that applying to the September class might make it very difficult now as I have read that the class has been filling up. Best of luck!

i'm sorry to hear that. i remember your stats were like 2.9 and 25 and you didn't retake some of those classes with Ds and Fs. did the admission committee say anything you can do to improve your chances of admission?

Sorry to hear that as well. As flick said, it's important to find out what the adcom thinks you should do to improve your apps and so that you're sure that you've learned from the past. Consider applying for the semester starting in May of the same year-don't they have the same match year? I know it's not the same as Jan but at least you won't be delayed.
Lastly, don't get discouraged. If this is want you want, remain persistent and work on ways to improve your app. Consider applying to some other schools as well (big 4 first of course, then other schools depending on how you feel about liscensing issues) but depending on what the adcom says, you might have a good shot at May. Find out and good luck!

The problem with my application wasn't the overall GPA or MCAT, but the science GPA. If only I knew how to study in undergrad. like I do now, I wouldn't be in this situation!
Spoke to someone by the name of Cathy at AUC, she was very polite and helpful. She recommended that I take some upper-level bio courses this Fall at a local University, and if I were to do well (which I will!), then it could help increase my chances of getting in. I don't know how much 9 or 10 credits will increase my GPA considering I graduated with 130 credits, but I hope that the difficulty of the courses and good grades in them would show AUC that I can succeed and am willing to put in the time and work to do well.
Do you all recommend that I also speak to the admissions director about what I can do to better my chances for January or May 2009?

With 130 hours 9-10 credits will do nothing for the most part for your GPA or even science GPA. What is important is that you take enough difficult science classes that you show them that you can handle a medical school course load. I would try to take 12 hours and maybe make one of the four classes and easier science course disguised as a difficult upper level. Good luck...

If you are interested in medicine and you are preparing to attend medical school in the carib, than it is a good idea to start enjoying the practice of independent research and acquiring information on your own :) American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine (http://www.aucmed.edu) was just recently re-done and hosts a wealth of information that should answer most of your questions. All other answers can be found through searching these forums.... if you STILL have questions than I'm sure the forum members will be happy to answer them!!! good luck w/ the mcat

Hi guys, I have been reading a lot about a AUC and it is on my first choices this year. I am planning to apply this December for May 2009.
But I have to admitted, I have so much hopes to get in. What would be a "good candidate" for the admissions committee. I have read that many people have applied with 2.9 and 2.8 gpas and don't get in. I have a graduate (Masters in Biology 42hrs) gpa of 3.6, but my undergrad gpa is of 2.1. I will be graduating this May 2009 as well and I am taking the MCAT this August. It has been hard because I work +40 hours at week (support family) and take at least 6-9 hours every semester.
Please some input will be appreciated.
Thanks.

I asked my admissions advisor yesterday if there were still spots open in the September class and she said there definately was, so she was like "Okay no problem I'll change your app to September instead of January as I had marked on my app. Do you guys think there actually Are spots, or are they just saying that? I was thinking maybe because I mentioned I got into Ross for January, that she just didn't want me to dump AUC. . .yet.

There are still spots open for fall. Submit your app. If you get in, and by some chance it has filled up by then, you'll get rolled over into the Jan class. You should be fine though.
And my 2 cents, I would (and did) pick AUC over Ross and even (gasp!) SGU. The island is far superior, the classes are smaller, and I got an overall better impression from the school on all fronts.
Hey, if SGU has cheerleaders on here, AUC needs some too...

Uh yeah, about that whole thing regarding whether or not AUC was lying about September seats being available, I was also told that there were open seats. SGU I think just stole my money cuz they (3 different people) told me the fall class was full before I applied, but then I got an email on a Thursday saying my app was going to be reviewed, and then received a letter dated the next monday saying I didn't get in. I'm not so upset about not getting in, but the whole process seemed shady.

07-11-2008, 09:21 PM
I also got a shady vibe from SGU, the students, their so called "admissions counselors" kept calling constantly telling me how great the school was; they even talked to my mom, untill I finally called them and paid the application fee, and no one has called since then. When I did finally pay it the lady on the other line said, "okay that was all I wanted." The whole process was a huge turnoff. Even though people who went there and they are doing great, in very good residency programs. I know the same of people from AUC, it's all a personal decision, based on personal experiences, preferences, but no one better than the other in the end.

Hey everyone!
So today around 12 oclock I got the call... I'M IN!!! I was overly excited, I was expecting to have to go through an interview, but that obviously didnt happen. I guess they liked me?
Right now, Im struggle over the decision that has been discussed for ages.. Ross or AUC... and the more I read about the experience that AUC students have been having the more I'm inclined to go there. AUC seems like a great school, the smaller classroom sizes are great. I should note that this is a huge factor for me because I am Canadian, and I did my undergrad at the University of Toronto, where my first year physic class only had a mere 1200 students in it... Lets just say, Im tired of being a number. Anyway, on top of the great class size, I like the cost as well. At ~10K per semester the school is the cheapest of the big three. I also got accepted in SGU, but due to past experiences with them (they're unbelievably arrogant) I've elected to dismiss them all together. So yea, I think I've made up my mind... AUC all the way. Can't wait to see you all!
Cheers

guys i had a question. i got into ross jan 2009. my stats are 3.33 and 25p mcat with mediocre ec's do i have a shot at auc. i have been hearing that auc is much better than ross with regards to the living conditions. What i want to know is which school offers you a better chance to get into surgery residencies and is it true tat ross is losing clinical sites that AUC is acquiring.

From any of the big 3 - surgery residency will be tough but ultimately dependent upon your Step and clinical rec's, interview etc.... Go where you will be most comfortable and able to perform at best.

That said, once my application was complete, I waited about 1 month before I got the call! I hope that helps, and I hope you get in!

Thank Nelphus!!! Ironically enough i didnt sleep much last night. I guess my epi levels were thru the roof from the excitement lol As for India, absolutely NO ONE can tell you what your chances are, since none of us are on the admissions board. All i can say is that my cGPA was decent, I had a high twenties MCAT score, and LOTS of volunteer hours and community service. With me, I personally cant be in the lab, i find it depressing. So I had 7 years of volunteer experience at my local hospitals emergency department, and I formed and ran my own non-profit-organization, that was dedicated to educating the youth of toronto, on diseases that affect our local and international communities. Im a people person, and show lots of leadership skills, so i guess they liked me. That and I think my profs wrote amazing reference letters. Ok hope some of that helps. Have a great night and GOOD LUCK!!!

AUC is not better. SGU isn't better either...well maybe a little bit better, but its mostly the same. SGU just has a killer rep.
AUC is not better than ross, at least not in terms of academics. its prolly better in terms of location, class size, and the way its managed. from what i have been reading, it seems ross has really gone down the drain. they seem to have a large number of disgruntled students.
that being said, ross isn't better than AUC. and a lot of people choose AUC over either ross or SGU since the academics are basically the same, and all the other intangibles are better.
also, i don't think ross has better residency rates. they have twice the class size we do, so they have more hard to get residencies. bottom line is, you can do whatever you want at all 3 schools. you can flunk out (i hope thats not me) or you can rock the world.

Enlighten us, would you, on this reputation you speak of. Where does this reputation reside, besides in the cobwebs of your mind?
In fact, there is no way to gauge the difference between the "reputations" of any of the four 50-state schools.
Maybe SGU is more familiar to PDs in New York, but AUC is more familiar with PDs in Michigan. That is not reputation, that is based on familiarity.
Big difference.

Your GPA is right around where it's usually at for an AUC student, as is your MCAT (maybe a bit in the low side). But considering you've sent in your app fairly early and you seem to have some good extracurriculars, I think you should have a good shot.
And AUC does not require an interview - in fact, most students get in without one - but they have been known to conduct interviews from time to time usually if they find something really jarring in a person's application. But if you get one, I don't think it's cause to worry because at least you know they haven't rejected you - it's just a sign that they have a couple more questions about you they want to learn the answers to before saying yes.

Yeah I think by reputation, he defiantely means familiarity just like you said CaptainInsaneO. SGU and Ross each take like a thousand extra students a year compared to AUC and graduate a few hundred more than AUC. I'm personally from Arizona. . .yes Arizona. . .and even here Everyone has heard of SGU and Ross and some of my professors even have said they have had students go to those. Therefore, in terms of numbers, I guess residencies Also see many more SGU and Ross students all around the country. So I'm assuming of course if someone just hasn't ever heard of a specific school such as AUC, they would "judge" the school pretty harshly that way, Especially since its foreign. I mean no one automatically knows that AUC happens to be one of the 4 "recognized in all 50 state" schools. And I don't go to any of these schools yet, I'm still waiting on decisions, but I'm sure even in Michigan, they know SGU pretty darn well.

Familiarity does not equal reputation. Just because you haven't heard of the London School of Economics or La Sorbonne does not mean that they don't have one of the best reputations in the world for political science. In the same vein, just because you (and the majority of Americans) are familiar with The University of Phoenix does not give them a reputation for a good education.
They are not the same and the moderator, Stephew (SGU grad at Harvard now), agrees with me in saying that there is no such thing as 'reputation' coming from the Caribbean.

Hi, does anyone know if AUC is on the FAFSA list for financial aid. If not, what loan programs are good for AUC?
Yes, AUC is part of the FFELP program, meaning that students are entitled to apply for federally backed loans, such as Stafford and Grad PLUS. AUC, along with SGU and Ross, are the only Caribbean schools that are approved for the federal loans.

You don't need to mail one to MEAS as part of the application, so long as you uploaded it to your online application. Should you be accepted, then you would need to mail them to MEAS as part of the immigration documents. Good luck!

I think you mean high scoring MCAT. But yes, I agree, gpa is a little on the low side, but with a strong MCAT you should still have a decent shot. Study hard, apply early, and see what happens. Good luck!

I think AUC's average is about a 22-23 if I'm not mistaken which would suggest you have a fairly good shot considering your GPA is quite a bit above the mean.

Well that post was short yet depressing, but I'll apply anyways, will AUC tell me specifically what I need to improve on to get in?
Currently I'm working in a biochem research lab and plan on continuing there until December, the good thing is I'm taking 3 biochems in the fall semester and am pretty cool with the PhD students so hopefully I can discuss a lot of material with the students and score really well in the semester.
MUA-N is a good bet, but I am slightly weary of the non cali approved school, hence the application to AUC.

Is 2.2 your overall gpa or your science gpa? In either case, that is pretty low, so may want to consider taking some extra classes and/or time to bring that up to a more competitive range, probably around 3.0. A good upward trend would certainly help, and it might not hurt to go for a higher MCAT as well. I personally would leave MUA-N as a far last resort, since they are not eligible for federal loans nor are their graduates eligible for licensure in all 50 states. It depends on your personal situation/goals. Good luck!
Shiz77
08-08-2008, 04:44 PM
My overall is a 2.2, Science is around a 2. Yea it is pretty low, I am taking 4 courses next semester and aiming for As in all. Within the last 8 months (last semester of my final year and the summer) I seem to have gotten my act together, but it's hard to change years of foolin around. I doubt I can bring up my overall GPA to a 3.0 with one year of school, since I have already got my BSc., the 2.2 is 4 years :S.
MUA-N isn't that bad from what I have read, I am Canadian so I don't know what the loan situation is with me, however the state approvals are a downer. I don't think I want to write the MCATs again, but if I do end up getting As in the courses I take this semester hopefully AUC will be a possibility.
Do you guys think 4 courses is enough or should I take 5? Thanks again for all the help, and yeah I'm applying on tuesday anyways.
have you thought about doing a post-bacc and then apply? your 28 is good...

Arghh I've been waiting for a reply for Jan 09' since my application went in mid-June. They told me they are waiting for letter of recommendations to come in. In the last 2 weeks I've tried contacting MEAS and asking if they have received any letters yet.. but I can't seem to get a hold of my advisor. Any ideas? Call the senders of your letters if you haven't already and find out the date they sent it. Also try sending your adviser an e-mail, mine seemed to get busier as the week progressed, but if I sent an e-mail, he would always call the following day. Hope this helps, good luck.

I was recently notified that my application for Jan 09 is complete. I called to ask a few questions from my advisor and talk to him about my chances.
Just wondering if the advisor's have any say in the decision? My advisor told me that he would consider me a competitive applicant for the January term and believes I have a really good chance. I don't want to get my hopes up...What do you guys think? Should I be excited by his encouraging words, or do they tell this to everyone?

I don't think anyone knows for sure, but it looks like the adviser does not have a direct say in the admissions decision. However, they have plenty of experience with how the adcom works, so they would be able to gauge your competitiveness. Take some relief from what he told you, but at the same time don't get too far ahead of yourself...By the way, what are your stats?

You definitely look pretty good to me. Gpa is solid, good extracurriculars. MCAT is just a tiny notch on the low end, but your gpa and ECs should make up for it. Plus the January semester is slightly less competitive. Best of luck!
Does anyone here think gettin into Sept. session is better than Jan?..If so, why? how?
Any help would be appreciated ..Thanks!!

I hear the same thing. Can somebody clarify: "you might not make the match". For example. if you started Jan 09', does that mean you won't make the match with the September 08' class but rather, you will instead make the match at the same time as September 09' class?

how long is the process from the time you submit the online application to hearing a decision? (for those already accepted)
I wont be able to submit my app until i get my MCAT score a week from today since I there's a chance I'll have a shot at a US school if i did well.
If I end up doing mediocre, then i wont bother reapplying the next cycle and go the AUC route
Im just worried if waiting to submit the application is hurting my chances day by day. And I know there's half the number of seats available for january.
Itempest
09-02-2008, 06:39 PM
There's half the number of seats available for January, but if I'm not mistaken, the applicant pool is also much smaller. The Jan and May classes are supposedly less competitive since the vast majority of applicants apply for Fall.
That said, the process took about 4 weeks to get a decision from the point when my application was considered complete. i.e. AUC had everything (recommendations, transcripts, application, etc.).
I think 5 months (now-ish) is just about the time they recommend people start sending apps in, but I am not sure if the difference between now and one week from now will be significant enough to drastically change your chances. As long as you have everything else ready, if you send it the day you get your MCAT score, I imagine you'll be fine. You could probably already get started on the other stuff - like having your school send transcripts, having your letters of recommendation sent, writing your personal statement, etc.
thanks for the advice:D
i actually sent in my transcript as soon as graduated this past june and received my final grades - anticipating a situation like this.
i didn't receive my final LORs until a couple weeks ago. I just hope my pre-med advisor is now doing her part in getting my committee letter done so my package can be sent out on the 8th also.
Given that they already have my transcript, i hope the application can be considered complete in a shorter time.
I've heard that people who don't receive seats in the Fall get rolled over to January. Any idea of how many people that is? It's a smaller pool of applicants but I would imagine competing for one of 70 seats remaining would be a little tough :(

jhmc, how is your application process coming along? Did you receive your MCAT scores and will be applying to AUC? By the way, did you get your references to send in the LOR?
i got my score yesterday and didnt do as well as I expected
so I submitted my e-application this morning for AUC and just mailed out the signature form
i have to notify my pre-med advisor today to send out my LORs by tmw.
I tried calling AUC's admissions office to verify that they had my transcript but no one picks up the phone...=/
my premed advisor sent out my letter of rec package in today's mail so if all goes well, my application should be complete by Monday
i haven't been assigned an AUC advisor yet but should be hearing from them this afternoon or tomorrow i suppose

med schools are getting harder to get into these days... and soon, the big 3 (or 4) will be competitive to get into as well

do you really think so?
Itempest
09-12-2008, 09:03 AM
do you really think so?
I think for sure Med schools in the US have gotten more competitive lately. There are way more applicants and so colleges can afford to be more selective - therefore average MCATs have risen, average GPAs have risen, everything about a US Med school matriculant's resume has "more" of everything. Many US schools would scoff at a 30 MCAT, for example. Therefore there are more people who do not get in and try alternative routes like the Caribbean or DO schools, and the same cycle repeats itself - more applicants, schools can afford to be more selective, higher average MCAT, GPA, etc.
The same is true for virtually any level of schooling with a competitive entry system. Harvard undergrad, for example, in the most recent round of undergrad acceptances, admitted only 7.1% of the applicant pool - an all-time low even for them.

You'll get a packet in a few days with a bunch of papers telling you what you will need to do. Some things to get started are, contact your local police department about getting a "Letter of Good Standing." Usually they will know what you mean.
Also, get out your vaccination records and get an appointment to get some vaccinations you might not have and a couple of tests (HIV, Hep B, TB etc.).

Congrats to everyone. Make sure you take care of your flight asap because they sure aren't cheap anymore. The rest of the paperwork should be done soon because your time to come here will be quickly approaching. As for housing, if you're trying to get a place in the dorms, we were told by early/mid August about the availability, so you have about 3 weeks of leeway. That's a little to last minute for me. There are a ton of places to live around here, you just have to check them out ahead of time or start asking around. All the best!!!

with regards to the dorms...it shouldn't be a problem getting a spot in the January class. The dorms fill up in the September class, but there are more spots than there are students in January and May, and not all students live in the dorms anyway (those who come with someone or just don't want to). If you want to live in the dorms for the January semester, pretty much guaranteed that you'll be able to.

I'm in!
well....mostly.
my admission adviser called me a couple days ago. she said that I was waitlisted for january 2009 so i'm in if i get off the waitlist (which she said was very likely) otherwise i start in may 2009.
this is just great, i applied earlier this year and was flat out rejected in a week and a half with my 19M MCAT. i'm super excited!!!!
if anyone is wondering, my stats were:
MCAT: 19M the first time, 24L the second time
GPA: 3.26
sGPA: 3.00
a ton of extracurricular stuff, shadowing, volunteering, president of a club

Hi,
I was accepted for January '09 in a very timely matter (only about 2 weeks after my application was complete) and thought I would share my stats.
cGPA: 3.23
sGPA: 3.22
C- in Ochem II, C in Biol I
MCAT: 19R & 25P
Employment, plenty of extracurriculars and volunteer, study abroad experience
Good luck to those still in the process.

did your advisor give you a reason why you were waitlisted? My stats & EC's are similar to yours
my app was complete this past monday so hopefully i'll hear some good news a week from today.
i'm just worried i applied a bit late and will probably be apart of a much bigger, competitive applicant pool.

i actually didn't even ask, i was just excited that i got in. and it isn't a big deal to me if i start in january or may so i didn't ask. i am assuming it's because the january class is full, i dont know why else i would be on the waitlist.
i dont think you applied late though. my application was complete exactly two weeks ago on friday the 12th. Then they told me on wednesday that i was waitlisted so it wasn't even 2 weeks before the admission committee replied.
if anything you'll get waitlisted and they'll tell you to start in may. i dont think they will reject you if the class is full, they usually just put people in the following semester. :D

also, has anyone been on the waitlist, or knows of anyone on the waitlist? how quickly do people get off the waitlist? the woman told me that it was very likely but that's all she said. I'm just wondering because she said they could tell you at the latest 30 days before the semester starts and i dont want to be scrambling for plane tickets, packing, loans and all that a month before i start.

when i spoke to my adviser last week monday, he said there were plenty of seats still available for January so i don't think it's full just yet...unless alot of people were accepted this past week
only reason i could think of being waitlisted is people who took their MCAT on 8/15 & 8/22 got their scores these past two mondays and now have their apps complete. So now the admissions committee is being overwhelmed with apps and are prioritizing students who want to start in January based on how competitive their stats are.
the 30 days notice is probably the event in which someone who got accepted to AUC for Jan 09 withdraws and goes to another school like SGU, whose admissions process is much longer. The deadline to apply for the January semester is a month before it begins i believe. So if a spot is available by that time, you'd be put in.
again..im just speculating =/, but it makes sense.
i'd be happy if i just got an acceptance too..although i'd prefer to start in January.

i won't know for a while because im still finishing my pre-reqs and taking the january mcats......
just wondering how did everyone else deal with the stress? i probably don't have much of a right to complain, seeing as how im not in med school yet, but im putting together my application while working fulltime and taking night classes and im feeling a bit stressed... :(

yeah, that's also possible. what's important though is that you will probably get in. if not for january, then definitely for may. and if they get back to you like they did with me, you'll find out within a week if you got in. good luck!

Saba is not eligible for federal loans, which is a big problem for many people. Also, I don't think that many people would want to live on that island, if given the choice to live in SXM instead. It's a nice place to visit for the weekend, but that's about the extent of it.
Lemacfar
10-13-2008, 06:24 AM
You should see the face on SABA students having to get off the plan in SXM and board that little plane to SABA and live like their in the amazon. Plus you'd learn to hate us AUC students real bad

Jrsygrl, i was pretty much in the same situation as you, actual it was exactly the same I got into SABA and paid the deposit and then got into AUC and Ross within the next three weeks. There were a lot of reason i decided to come to AUC, one, it seemed to have a good reputation with pretty decent Residency placements to boot, two, federal loans which makes everything easier, and three, a much nicer island (at least in my opinion). That was enough to convince me, but really, you should go wherever you feel more comfortable.

Depends on where you're coming from. I fly from the DC area, which seems to be significantly cheaper than most people I talk to. I usually pay anywhere from around $400 - $550, depending on when I book and how flexible I am. I used to swear by kayak.com, but they've since lost American Airlines for some reason. Since American Airlines is the largest carrier into SXM, this was a big problem. Now I just usually search aa.com, usair.com, and delta.com.

just to second that, i had a smiliar experience when i visited in october..i'm excited to be moving down as well. i was initially worried because people can do wonders manipulating pictures but the campus does look like the pics and the island as a whole seems like a pretty cool place...if you go in knowing that its not the U.S. and not 100 % paradise and there is poverty, abandoned houses, some crime, etc... then you'll be just fine..if you need to ease into the island life, i'm sure a trip or two to cost-u-less will do the trick

congrats anu, as far as apartments close to auc, it is probably getting harder and harder to get one, get an off campus housing list from auc and/or contact solutions ( i know they own a lot of places close to campus) as far as books, everyone seems in agreement not to buy the all the req books from auc there is a list on here some students have put together and the cheapest way to buy books seems to be either buy them from an upper sem or look on amazon and bring them with you
