Hi,
For those of you who have been through a hurricane season in the Cayman Islands. How bad is it really? Is it torrential rain or can it easily be dealt with say if you were walking and all of sudden where caught in it?

Honestly the last few seasons have not been too bad. Although if one was coming I do not think you would want to be outside stuck walking in it. I'm just sayin.
If it looks to be really bad the school has contingency plans to get students off the island, or if you get jittery can just hop on a plane on your own to get out of dodge.

I'm from the Dominican Republic and I know sometimes it can get pretty bad as long as life won't be a wet tshirt contest everyday I think I can survive. Thanks for the info.

I was here for the 2007 hurricane season and it wasn't bad. Yea it rains alot, but nothing that you can't handle. Everyone (including me) freaked out when hurricane Dean was heading our way, but most of us were off island when it was forecast to hit the islands anyway.
Just take the proper precautions and everything will be fine.

I plan on getting off the island if one is headed our way. I'm saving up my absences and got the credit card on stand-by.
I went through hurricane Hugo in South Carolina about 20 years ago. I was too young to realize the danger but now looking back I don't want to go through it again.

I hear you on that one but you will take the risk of flying over a hurricane or will you just wait it out. I guess you would just be looking out for the news but sometimes they catch you off guard. Not really scared just preparing myself in case there is one.

Make sure the school has your current phone number so you can be alerted ASAP

Fall 2005 was no Hurricane Ivan year, but we were brushed by Wilma. Huge waves crashed into apartments along Seven Mile Beach. One SMU student was sitting in her living room with some friends and a wave crashed through the french doors and soaked the laptops, etc. The guy had to be taken to the hospital with multiple shattered glass induced lacerations.
West Bay road by the public beach was covered in sand and was difficult to traverse (this was before the bypass). Downtown Georgetown was blocked off from traffic due to debris.
The island was quick to clean up though, and I don't believe we missed a day of school.

man.... I totally forgot how hurricane season was until last week came around. I guess the past semester being hot/sunny weather everyday made me forgot how much it rains here. Its been raining here everyday for a week now....
If I was still walking to class, I'd be in hugeeeeee trouble

for any newcomers wont worry. The school has made it a very important issue of being prepared if any hurricane would hit the caymans.
The island is also very well prepared. The flag ship airlines of the caymans add enough flights during a hurricane warning that would allow anyone that wants to leave the island the opportunity to do so.
