Hi i'm torn between AUA and Windsor's basic sciences programs. I keep hearing all these great things about windsor like the tuition is 5 k per semester and that housing and books are included. I dont' know it seems a little too good to be true. I'm just a little apprehensive. If someone could let me know how the school is in general in terms of faculty support, exams, difficulty, and overall success rate and residency matching I would really appreciate it. Thanks

I wouldn't consider Windsor or any other non-NY accredited school unless the school gave you a written guarantee that all their clinical rotations are done in association with ACGME-accredited residency programs in that area (rather than some "family medicine umbrella" crap that some schools like to peddle.)

I've noticed that a lot of these schools have unaccredited/"Blue book" rotations which result in you not being able to practice medicine in a whole bunch of states.

i suggest u go to AUA

but once at AUA, u have 2 options

1) fail and get a $100k+ debt
then come to WSOM
like 50% of AUA students anyway

2) pass

you can always do your residency in another state and practice in NY. NY is a rip off anyway, you're better off doing residency in a state like Pennsylvania. I haven't started classes in Windsor yet, but a couple of my friends attend it and like them, I chose Windsor over AUA. I think in terms of teaching and helping students score on the USMLE, everyone who attends WSOM would agree that the teachers care about their students. I have yet to experience that myself, but people I know love it down there, and they love the staff. And from other posts on this forum, its evident that theres many graduates from Windsor that have obtained licenses. You're getting your medical education, and you won't have years of debt to pay off.

NY state has many IMG friendly residency positions therefore AUA is at an advantage in that sense.

The material taught at WSOM is the same at any other medical school. We study from the same textbooks, write the same board exams, and even rotate at the same hospitals as other medical school students (but for way cheaper).

In the end it is your own choice. I suggest you visit Windsor and AUA before making a decision.

Who says one can't get residency or get licensed in NY? Where does that come from. The onlybenefit for the school to be NYS approved is doing clinical rotations in NY. If school like WUSOM is not approved their students are allowed to do no more than 12 weeks of clinical rotations in NY. There are plenty of ppl doing residency and getting licensed here from schools which are not NY approved. But You should call Albany or go on NYSED.gov and do Your own search

wat i meant in my post was that since AUA students rotate in NY, they have a better chance at making connections and eventually have a higher chance at obtaining a residency and practicing in NY.

It could help a lot more if someone is interested in prematch. Also, obtaining a NYS approval is a milestone in any school's development, but it will become increasingly difficult for ANY foreign school to secure rotations in NY. There are many new D.O and even MD schools openning, existing U.S schools increase their class sizes. Also SGU secured 100 mil contract with HHC hospitals in NY for the next 10 yrs. My take on it is if Your school is not a part of all of the above....NY would be waaaaay tooooo overrated for You.

Back to the OP: while AUA has accomplished some incredible things in a very, very short period of time....it's still a diet coke vs diet pepsi type of arguement. Except for Big 3 (SGU, AUC, ROSS) schhools which have Stafford loans under title IV most other schools are experiencincing loan blues, and it probably will continue for the next few years. AUA success sure comes with a price tag. Just compare their tuition to the big 3 who have been around over 30 years, and have a track record and practicing graduates in every State and many other countries. you'll see quite minimal diff, and AUA may cost you even more, if you consider interest on a private loans. SABA wich costs a lot less will give you the best bang for your buck. I left it out of Big 3 b/c they don't have Stafford loans either.

Best of Luck

auc just signed a contract this week with nassau university medical center for 70 or so starting slots which they expect to increase within the year. all acgme greenbook. there are still hospitals in new york that can take on students. the question is whether any given carib school will pay up for the top notch slots/hospitals and i think that is the main issue with securing new spots. many carib schools dont want to flash money, but with sgu signing that huge contract....... a new precedent was set and they will have to start paying to make inroads.
