i would recommend buying a cheap island car from another student. stay away from the leasing companies (whether it be through a car rental place or a dealership).

something tells me that since they asked for a referral they might have already made up their minds.......and i couldnt agree more.
some people are big proponents of buying a junker and keeping your fingers crossed, others for leasing and still others for shipping your car. this is like a debate on abortion or capital punishment....when you have staked your position there is not much someone else can do to sway you =)

Well that's odd...someone in my semester just used them to ship their car here (it's actually supposed to arrive this week). I'd try back Monday.

What kind of leasing is the best; monthly, half yearly or full year !
Would lease payment would cover car insurance !
What would be the average cost of leasing car!

i would not do it yearly.....most legit places will let you go month to month as we have been doing for the past 19 months. insurance is included.
for prices contact the individual companies

I have rented previously and got a great car (only 1 year old) with no problems. The payment was a bit steep, $400/month, but well worth the peace of mind. It included insurance. Just depends on what you are looking for. Personally, just rent from month to month. That way you are not locked into any contract. Hope this helps.

Is a car a necessity while at AUC? ie... is it possible to go without one if, say, you live near campus, or would you still need a car in this scenario (to do shopping etc.)?
Thanks!

some people go without one, some people are also mooches. if you plan your trips and cook at home a lot, etc. you can rent one for the weekend once in a while

Do most students ship their car, buy one on the island or lease a car?
This has been discussed many times, so please run a search.
My quick opinion:
Shipping a car is the best possible idea, if you have one to ship. Just don't expect to take it home in the same condition that you shipped it.
Many (probably most) students by a car on the island.
Leasing a car is the worst option of the three.
search for details..
