Hi! I'm new here and I need some information. I graduated college back in the Philippines but I'm currently living in Florida and a permanent resident. I want to go to medical school in the Philippines and having a hard time with taking the NMATs I know they conduct NMAT in LA and chicago but the problem is I earned my degree over in the philippines, so I'll have to have it signed by our dean back in the phil? Also I want to know what schools to consider if I want to do my residency here in US? I was thinking of trying my luck with UST or UE. If I get an 80 on my NMAT and a GPA of 3.45 what are my chances in getting in to both schools?would you guys say I have a good chance? Or do I need a higher NMAT grade? Hope to hear from you guys soon. Thanks!

Since you had your college or pre-med in the Phil. then you won't need extra adjustment to the style of teaching there. There are not many med school applicants these days so you are in luck as competition is not fierce unlike a decade ago. I don't even think they are even strict with the grades although they have established some "cutoffs" with NMAT but some get in with lower NMAT score. With UST, you can be safe at 65 while in UERM it's 55 depending on the batch.

Trauma, I can pretty much second what you said..... and I would add that do not limit your application to just those 2 schools. I would also suggest that you negotiate the "donation fee" to either paying only by semester and NOT up front OR NO donation fee at all!!!!!!!

I was thinking they shouldn't ask me to pay the "donation fee" because I did get my degree in the Philippines. My predicament is coming back and forth to the Philippines for the NMATs, its so hard since I'm here but I earned my degree there. I know I shouldn't limit my options to 2 schools but I'm only familiar with the programs of 3, UP included can you suggest and give me information about the medical programs in other schools. I would greatly appreciate it! Oh! And I did look them up unfortunately most school websites are not that specific about their respective programs (at the moment), so I only depend on peoples experience on information. Thanks hope to hear from you guys soon!

you must get in touch with the schools to get the right info.... but among the schools I would try are UST, UE, de la Salle, FEU, St Lukes, MCU, UP, Angeles Foundation, CIT, Cebu Doctors, etc.

You can email these schools with your inquiry. They will respond. They did when I emailed them.

Not in med school but know enuf about it cuz not only am I surrounded by relatives & friends in the medical field but have also researched it for upcoming enrollment of my kid. In addition, I recently visited several of these schools and spoke directly with the Deans of the college and/or the Director of Admissions to get factual information.

Prior to visiting them, I made appointments with each one via email. Even just with email, many of them responded and answered all my questions. I also learned a lot just by surfing their respective websites but I wanted face-to-face meetings and a tour of the schools.

All I can tell you is that any opinion I share in this forum will be objective and with no malice. That is one reason why I always recommend to contact the schools directly when anyone has questions specific to the school.

While I agree I also would caution applicants that Med school is not easy and they need to study hard to survive (admission is easier though). While I agree that he/she should inquire with FEU, De La Salle and the Cebu Schools, I have learned some new development with St. Luke's. It is becoming a very tough school to survive as they want their students to be the best but they fail a lot of students. Currently only 10 students are left in their incoming batch and they don't care as they are financially viable even with few med students.

Hi Milkway 1417!

I think we are on the same boat.
I graduated with BSN in one of the most reputable university in the Philippines and very keen in getting an admission to medical school in Manila.

With your residency status (as permanent resident), how did you qualify for Florida residency (how many years will it require you to be a permanent resident in Florida? or months?) and or what are the chances of leaving the United States in lieu of 4-5 years medical training in the Philippines?. Will You be able to get a re-entry status as an immigrant in the States?. i.e.,if doing your clerkship or residency program in the U.S.?

I did work as an operating room nurse in UP-PGH (University of the Philippines -Philippine General Hospital) before working for 5 years in London and now currently as operating room nurse here in Florida.

I mite help/give some info re application to Phil med school.

Your response re my querries is much appreciated.

Have a good day and Godspeed on your application too!

Josh, I was going to try to respond to your question but I am not too clear on what exactly you are asking. Is there more than one question or are you just aslking how to re enter the US in case you are doing residency here and decide to leave and come back???

On matters like this where the info you need has to be really accurate, I would strongly suggest you visit the US immigration website and research the answer there. Its a very useful website and easy to find answers.

Google USCIS to find their website

I would probably not rely too much on second hand information.

Hi!. Thanks for your response.

The website (USCIS) is mainly (on broadly) generalized matters..I want to speak to the operator but its purely an automated response.

My main query is that I will be leaving the United States (as permanent resident/greencard holder) to peruse my medical degree in the Philippines. Having said that, will I be able to keep my greencard status while I will be away for almost 5 years and re-enter the U.S. for clerkship or residency training?

hey josh! uhmmm I wrote a really long private message regarding ur questions but I don't have enough posts daw for me to send them to you and then na-erase nlng po bgla! medyo mahaba po kc pero ito po yung suggestion ko is to visit USCIS pero I've been calling them too and they can't really answer my questions regarding preserving my residency for naturalization purposes. They made me contact the US embassy in manila regarding my questions tpos when I called US embassy in manila nmn I was told na they don't handle the naturalization process so they can't answer my question so ask USCIS dw. Its frustrating to be passed around! Pero I suggest read about the re-entry permit (I-131) and N-400, they are very helpful if you have the same concern as mine. Mine is I want to preserve my 3-4 yrs residency in Florida for naturalization purposes, they have an application for preserving residency for naturalization purposes the N-470 but I don't qualify for that eh. San po pla kayo s Florida and when do u plan to attend medical school in the Philippines? Hopefully this helped you...mas ok sna private message ko ang haba nun at kung ano ano p inexplain ko hehe

I see that your online but I guess you either haven't received my PM or having a hard time replying. I believe you have to have at least 5 posts before you can send a PM. Sorry if I keep on bugging you just wanted some answers as soon as possible. In case you didn't receive my PM...I wanted to know where you took your NMAT and if you took it here in the US how did you go about it? Did you ask someone from the Phil to have the identification form signed by the dean? Hope to hear from you soon. By the way thanks for the replies...

This is hilarious! I'm sure you did, annoying isn't it! There was a problem because u don't have enough posts. I had the same problem yesterday when I PM'd you, you have to have at least 5. Otherwise, it'll just all be erased. It happened to me yesterday! So what I did was just post some stuff haha so I can PM you. LOL

i went to uerm for med school and now in practicing in Florida. I had classmates who were green card holders. basically there is a waiver allowing to stay out of the US to study. you have to renew it each year and it costs a fee. in addition, you have to come back to the us once a year.
