Hi everyone. I just got my orgo mark (D+). How will this mark affect me? My application is currently being reviewed by the admissions committee. I calculated my GPA and it is 3.77 with the organic mark. My problem is that I am not sure if I should tell them before I even get an interview or should I just wait. If I wait and they tell me that you have to redo the course then I wont be able to take it in summer school becuase it will be filled up, and I do not want to stay back for a year just to do orgo. What should I do?

If they don't ask, don't tell. I don't think it's being dishonest of you. You will get accepted or not depending on what they have right now. They seem to offer an unconditional acceptance, so your orgo mark won't matter. Most schools want to see your updated/final transcript before you're accepted, but not Saba. Even if you did tell them, a 3.77 is still far above the average. You would likely only have to give a reason/explain why you did so poorly.

lol i got a C- in orgo 1 and 2 and my gpa was i think a whole point below yours......no correlation whatsoever to board/medical school scores. relax and enjoy your life before med school

CANKID, they don't check ur final transcripts?? How do they know if you have finished or even passed the pre requisite courses??

They were able to see that you're enrolled in the prereq's when you initially sent your transcript in. They won't know if you passed or failed if they don't ask to see your final transcript. I suppose even if you failed you could still get in. I was taking 3 prereq courses when I got unconditionally accepted and I didn't have to send in my final transcript for review.

Is this something that happened to you only or is it a standard procedure at SABA? Can someone add their .02 cents.

Isn't a C- or above needed for state licensing? I have a C- in Orgo I.

Is Organic Chem. that hard? I have seen some really low scores posted. Do they curve the grades at all?

I have yet to take it, any tips to get better grades besides study real hard.

I think that it's the TIME you have to devote to organic chem is the killer! If I had it to do over again, I would have taken it in a summer semester or correspondance or in the lightest possible semester. I don't think the material itself is that bad, just make sure you take it when you will have lots of time to spend on the one course. :)

Orgo really is that hard! People don't call it Killer Chem for nothing. I found the first half much harder than the second (biological molecules). I ended up doing quite well in both sections but it was due to hard work and time commitment, like wizzle said. A lot of people take it in the summer to dedicate their time to the course and also because in Ontario, most med schools, with the exception of Mac, don't include summer courses into their GPA calculations. This helps the students who don't do well in the course.

I favor textbooks over lectures, but my Orgo book was dense as hell and the chapters were quite long.

How I did well:
The books Organic Chemistry as a Second Language I & II. They're relatively short with great explanations and lots of instructive practice problems. Saved my time, sanity and grades.

I hate to see all this negative stuff about orgo chem. I am taking them this summer…

That online class will schools accept that?

I contacted University of Arizona Med school and they will accept it. some schools dont accept the lab becuase its on-line. Contact the schools your applying to and ask them. That is the only way to have a definite answer.

Organic chem is somwhat like med school courses in that there is a lot of memorization. Thats why many med schools put a lot of weight on the course. If you are lucky you get a professor that makes it more interesting by occasionally giving anecdotes about what the different compounds are used for in real life.

I failed Calculus because I worked nights in college, that same semester I also made a C in General Chemistry I.
Don't quit.

Guys I need some advice. I got my mark for Orgo and I got an E. I actually passed both the lecture component and the Lab component for the course which was required, but the professor put another stipulation on passing the course. He made it mandatory that students get alteast 70% on 7/10 labs to pass the course. I was only able to get that for 6/10 although I easily passed the lab portion of the course. Hes now telling me I have to repeat the course becuase of this. I dont know what to do becuase I would have gotten a C not the D+ I originally thought. But now I have to repeat the whole course becuaes of this!!!

Will Saba also require that I repeat the course again? Someone please provide some insight.

if your prof put it in AFTER the syllabus was created, go talk to the dept head and any other admin who will listen!! if it is in the syllabus, it looks like you might have to re-take the course :( why not call and ask the admissions people for your advice? they're amazingly kind and helpful :) good luck!

Hi I took the University of New England course and it was overall a mediocre experience. I got an A- in the class online, which I thought was great.

WRONG!

I was even a local here in Maine, with UNE only 20 minutes away...

Most all medical schools require orgo 2 as well, so I enrolled in that through another college and took it classroom-style. The UNE course did not prepare me at all for the class. I barely escaped with a B, which I was thrilled with.

You just can't learn organic chemistry online. Period.

If you have any specific questions about the class don't hessitate to PM me.
