Homeless med student seeks shelter....

I will be starting at Wycoff in May and am looking for just a room to rent for 6 weeks (My wife will be joining me in July and we will look for an apartment then) any suggestions-tips-advice?


I have only been to Manhattan and have no idea about the Brooklyn area.

Can anyone recommend a Realtor in the Brooklyn area?

Which neighborhoods in Brooklyn are nice/safe/convenient?

I'm sorry I have NO info for you. I just wanted to say your subject line made me LOL because I've been "homeless" a couple times during clinicals. In fact, now that I think about it :omg:........ I'll be "homeless" again in 7 weeks! hahahaaha! joy.....

The area around Wyckoff is horrible to say the least. I wouldn't stay there if I were you. Williamsburg and Park Slope both are in Brooklyn and other students I know have lived there and said there are good apts that aren't too expensive. Try this site Urban Living - Welcomes the gates! (http://www.urbanliving.net) . I used it when I was in NY and they found a great place for me (just don't take apt 3F in the 32nd St building...:shock:). There's a variety of apartments all over NYC (and a variety of prices) so you should be able to find something that suites your needs. Another good site is Live in NYC.com -- New York City Apartments for rent (http://www.liveinnyc.com) and New York City Apartments and Condos - Gamut Realty Group, Inc. - 212-879-4229 (http://www.gamutrealty.com). They have a good number and variety of apts also. Also, there's another site for the Lara Group Inc., Furnished Apartments New York | New York City temporary housing and extended stay (http://www.nyfurnishedapartments.com). They are very pricey, but they have a lot of nice spots in Manhattan.

...another word of advice. ALWAYS go see the place before you settle on it. Pictures can be VERY deceiving. (and see it at night if you can...so you'll know if any critters will be living with you...seriously!)

Just a word of caution, ANYWHERE in NYC is going to be expensive. Apartments run about $1500-3000 depending on if you have a studio vs 1br, Manhattan vs Brooklyn. Just know that you get what you pay for. Unless you are going to have roommates and split the rent, a relatively nice apartment is going to be pricey so prepare for that early if you can. Good luck.

Don't forget about transportation. Wyckoff is off "L" train, anywhere else in BK and you may have to go to Manhattan, switch trains, and come back. Be careful.

Btw, parking sucks too unless you pay over a $100 a month for a private lot.

Years ago I stayed in and would visit my grandmother at her coop of N. Elliot place near the old NAVY Bldgs./ Yard. Walkign distance to ALBEE SQUARE MALL, Fulton Street etc....

Walking distance to a main train connection.

A bus ride then train ride away from anything.

My grandmother use to walk the Brooklyn Bridge regularly to work in Manhatten.

Out of @ 50year in Brooklynn she only ahd someone attempot to mug her once. She never drove a car while there and she always took the subway home in the evenings.

Actually....I'd avoid Wyckoff altoghether if I were you. It's a horrible program. Why not try Lutheran or Flushing? Both are good programs where you'll actually learn something....unlike Wyckoff. Just my 2 cents...take it or leave it.

I also want to add that Bay Ridge is a good choice as well...more because it is nice and safe, although it is not as convenient as Williamsburg or Park Slope. It took me anywhere from 50 minutes to an hour and a half to get to Wyckoff from Bay Ridge on the subway.

Whatever you do, avoid getting a broker or using an agent... It's a great way to get ripped off, lied to, and/or cheated in some way... I learned about that the hard way, but in the end, I found a place through Craigslist. Urbanliving.net was helpful also.

It's too bad you are looking for a place in May because I know of a large one bedroom basement apartment of a private house in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn (near Lutheran Medical Center) that will be available in late July... fully furnished, utilities included (cable, water, electricity), separate entrance. DSL internet available.. The landlady is super nice and prefers to rent to students.

i saw that you were looking for an apt. near wyckoff. i am leaving ny june 27. my lease will be up, but thought i'd help you out if i can b/c a friend found this place for me before i even saw the apt.

the apartment is in williamsburg brooklyn, 4 stops off the L train to the hospital & only 1-2 block walk to the subway. it only takes me ~15 min. total to get to the hospital. the rent is $1700/mo. there is a washer & dryer in the apt.; a/c on both floors (bedroom upstairs). the only negatives small bedroom upstairs, but you get roof access.

also, forgot to mention that the area i live in is very safe. i have lived here almost a year & never had a problem, even going to the gym ~3:30 in the a.m.

i never had the need for a car b/c wyckoff is only 4 subway stops away & manhattan is only 3 stops away. just fyi

Well I would suggest looking on craigs list for an apt. as far as williamsburg and bay ridge safe for who not someone like me. I lived in NY almost all my life and the last resort would be something right around Wycoff. If all else fails get something near the E train in Queens or A n C in BK and just transfer to the L only about 30-45 min ride during rush hr at most. BushwicK is alright; Brownsville is a no no; Canarse o.k.; East NY hell to the no; Bay ridge i guess o.k. a lot of pizza lol; all in all if you see 20" rims its a bad neighborhood and if you see kennedy fried chicken It is a bad neighborhood. If you see McDonalds Fried chicken you need to RUN and RUN quick. Another nice neighborhood if you have a car is Ridgewood its almost like flushing with the Italian/Asian mix very quiet and the food is good.

70 wyckoff avenue is one that is pretty close to the hospital found on craigs list but there is a lot of apts in that area especially in ridegwood.
