I am sorry for this post.. I have looked and I couldn't find this information.
Can someone please tell me how 5th semester in Miami is laid out. I heard you take the COMP your first week. Is there a step 1 review or is the entire semester strictly intro to clinical medicine. Why is the COMP the first week and what happens if you don't pass it. Also, when are you eligible to take step one.

If there are posts that answer this, fine.. link them to me.. please don't give me crap about asking questions about this and it has been answered.. I am not new on here, I just couldn't find this information and the NJ office never emailed me back, from a week ago, to answer these concerns.

Thanks for anyone that can give me answers!

In 5th semester, you have large group and small group. Large group is every Wednesday, usually all day, and small group is for about two hours every week but you get your small group time the week before so there is no set schedule for that. Also, you have your clinical sites that you go to, for either 1 or 2 weeks at a time. I had peds for 2 weeks and ER for 2 weeks but medicine for only 1 week. You get a couple weeks off too where you dont have assigned clinicals but you are supposed to be studying. Basically, you dont know your schedule until the week before but Wednesday large group is mandatory and they take attendance. Also, you can sign up for UMBR which is two nights a week and a full Saturday/Sunday, depending on which group you are assigned to. It is not mandatory but can be helpful, especially if Dr. Kudrath comes in to do lectures. I took the COMP the first week of the semester in Miami (bc of the hurricane) and failed it but took it again at the end of 5th and passed. You can take your Step as soon as you want after you passed the COMP but most people ended up taking a review course before taking the step. If you dont pass the second time, you can take it one more time. All in all, in 5th semester, they give you just enough stuff to keep you busy where you dont have time to study for the COMP or STEP so try to keep up as much as possible.

you spend alot of time driving around miami, although i cannot say that i did not have time to study. I have heard this from people previously and have to say that i disagree.

you can always make time.. but i was tired after sitting in traffic / going to lectures all day.. my opinion... if you can do it, then great!! one thing TRY TO PASS THE COMP ON THE 1ST TRY.. otherwise you'll have that monkey on your back and you don't want the pressure of being KICKED OUT OF SCHOOL.. some people say" oh you have more time to study if you fail" .... again you will be dismissed from school if you fail.. so pass the thing and go on with your life.. 8-)

5th semester = huge waste of time. Focus on studying and getting the most out of ur clinical experiences. Request ER!
