is there a time limit that you have to take the shelf exams in after finishing your rotation. i take the step 2 in july, so im not really studying for the rotations im on right now, b/c im studying for the step. i figure after i take the step, then ill take the shelf exams. has anyone taken thier exam a long time after they have finished the rotation? has anyone taken the shelfs after they have matched? i could call the school, but that would require them picking up the phone:roll:
Thanks.

yes there is a time limit and MEAS has informed people via email a few months back....i cannot remember what the exact amount of time you have, so you need to call MEAS. they have a rule regarding it and it can effect your ability to graduate on time.
but if you are studying for step 2 then you are by default studying for the shelves and they are good prep and practice for step 2......

thanks for the reply. i was under the impression that the shelves are a lot more detailed (rightfully so) than the step 2 per subject. i think the two obviously over lap. its just that my timing kinda sucks. i dont wanna bust my butt learning peds for six weeks, take the shelf, pass, then 3 weeks later take the step 2 and blow it b/c i spent 6 weeks trying to rock the peds shelf. id rather spend 9 weeks busting my butt for step 2, get a 250:twisted:, then spend 3 weeks brushing up on peds to take the shelf. step 2>>>> shelf. its just frustrating.

well spend 3wks on peds before you study for step 2....do well and then spend the rest of your time on step 2...
step 2 is alot easier and you probably only need a 3 to 5 wks for it....especially if have been taking the shelves and preparing for them as you good
either way best of luck.....you will be fine! i had to take my ob/gyn and peds shelf 4 wks before my step 2....it wasnt bad....

Yes there is a rule, and isn't it all so annoying at this point? Last January there was a email sent out with the subject line: examination and leave policy. All I read was "leave policy" and didn't really read the long email. Not too long ago (like yesterday) I decided to read the thing. NEARLY at the very bottom of the email it says:
6. Each student will have 120 days from the last day of their last clinical core to have completed all written core examinations.
and here is the really good part...
7. Any student who fails to meet this deadline will be notified of his/her deficiency, removed from electives and placed on Academic leave until he/she passes all written core examinations.
greaaaat. I would email and at least get your exam dates confirmed before they "fill up." all. so. very. annoying.

there is a 120 days limit.... or so they say
but if you email LJ at meas, she might be able to work something out with you... from what she had told me previously is that they do take into consideration of scheduling conflicts and/or of exam sites being filled for a certain shelf......... she was able to let me take a shelf exam about 5 months after my rotation without having "a deficiency letter placed in record" :)
