4 years is TOO long to stay 3000+ miles away from my soon to be fiance..
how possible is it for me to do cores + electives at california? i want to do mostly surgery / emergency medicine for electives (as this is what i want to do my residency in)
i hope to do my clinicals in CA, to meet more people and possible PD's and do an EM / Surgery residency somewhere in souther cali, like LAC+USC or UCLA med ctr, etc.

you can't...kern is the only place where there is a clinical center and if you are assigned there you still have to do peds in miami.
you can do 12 weeks of unaffliated electives, leaving 16 weeks of required electives that has a peds elective (4weeks), which you may be able to do at CHOC- but they don't take many students, and 10 weeks of electives that need to be done at sgu hospitals...you may be able to do surg and EM at san joaquin and kern, only IM and IM subspecialties can be done at Highlands.
as for UC programs...difficult at best- they are not very IMG friendly...USC is possible (at least for IM they are IMG friendly and there was a USC match in EM this year).
so best case scenario you may only have to spend 12 weeks out of cali, but...

Make your soon-to-be fiance move to New York with you. That will be the final test of your relationship! I kid, but seriously, it will be difficult to make an all California extravaganza for 3rd and 4th year.

keep in mind that even if you get accepted by a US school outside CA, you will still have to spend 4 yrs away from CA

It's tough but looks like I'm going to be spending all my clinical years in Cali. I just completed my third year at Kern and have my fourth year scheduled at Kern, Highland, and CHOC. I tried getting electives in the So. Cali schools but it was close to impossible. The only UC that considered accepting FMGs for rotations was UCI and they only accept 2 students per year. They need $250 just to apply and many of the popular rotations (EM) are off limits to FMGs. USC is accepting FMGs for residency but not for clinical rotations. Kern is your best shot for staying near So. Cal since it's about a 2 hour drive. You can do all your cores there but keep in mind the pediatrics rotation may not be accepted by all states.

the school has made a new rule about Kern- if you are placed at kern, then you have to go to Miami Children's..and i think its because of the potential issues with peds rotations at kern.
impressive you could keep everything in cali!

When did they start this? When I started at Kern, they didn't allow us to do a peds core anywhere else if we were doing our cores at Kern. Now, they're discouraging us from doing a peds sub-i at Kern but no one seems to have exact answers in terms of its implications. All I know is that we may have a problem getting licensure in Texas.

recently i think. I read it on the clinical website, but when i don't remember.
and well, its not just texas--any state that requires ACGME rotations will be a problem and cores are generally looked at a little harder than electives.

This is the tricky part. California accepts Kern's peds rotation because Kern has a family practice residency. As for the other states, I have no idea and looks like I have to contact each state's medical board to find out. On the bright side, I haven't heard of it being an obstacle to the 4th years that just matched.
