Looks like SMU is stepping up with the DAP, providing tuition and living expenses coverage for Fall. Not bad. Way to go SMU.

Too early to tell .. hopefully it's not a bandaid solution .. I'm crossing my fingers and hope for the best.

hope it works out. dosent help us for this semester however. If your trying to contact anyone in FA contact MM cause DS and GMA are absolutely useless. they never answer or return calls/emails and DS has been rude to a friend of mine and my buddies mother on the phone. Talk to MM he will help you out, he is a good guy, by far the best person i have spoken to in orlando.

So are we suppose to do nothing for the Summer Semester? I dont get it, why cant they just tell us what they expect from us now? I emailed financial aid asking what is the next step i should take now that Terri is gone...and so far no reply.

they did tell us what to expect. they said their parent company will be starting a loan program for new/current students starting fall 08, and that when everything is finalized which should be mid-summer, they will get things running and announce it.

this was more of a newsletter telling us that "hey guys, don't freak out, we're going to have this loan program ready for fall 08, its just that its not ready yet."

they also said that it will cover tuition and cost of living without having a co-signer, "if you're eligible"

Yeah exactly what happened to TAP? Why cant the TAP pull through for this summer semester?

Also I spoke with the financial aid office on the phone and they said if you are unable to achieve some sort of aid, email the office and they will "help you". I emailed them with no reply... And how come nobody is admitting that for this Summer Semester there is no aid whatsoever and half the school will be missing.

Can someone PLEASE post this so-called news letter?
The original is on Angel, but here it is:

Dear Students,

I am pleased to inform you that our parent company is working to develop a Direct Assistance Program, anticipated to be available for the Fall 2008 semester. This new loan program will help cover tuition and living costs. Current plans are that the Direct Assistance Program will be available to qualifying new and actively enrolled students, and will offer flexible credit terms without need for co-signature. More information will be available as program details are finalized this summer.

Thanks again for your continued support and cooperation as we work together to address the current difficulties in the credit markets.

Sincerely,
JM (Chancellor)

I am not trying to be rude here but I think that if you needed loans for summer and you wanted to apply with Teri then you should have done that when Health Express pulled out last year or when Dr. Choice pulled out a couple of weeks ago and not just waited till teri pulled out.
I understand that a lot of students are in a really bad situation now because they were approved by health express but not going to get their money from them. I also know of some students who were approved by health express but applied for both Dr. Choice and Teri to keep their options open and that was the wisest thing to do. Some applied, including me, got denied but for those who didn’t even apply for Teri, you cannot blame it on anyone else at this point unless you got approved by Teri but Teri is cancelling your contract.
Credit should be given when due… the school has decided to start this DAP and I hope that it goes thru. If some students have to take ONE SEMESTER OFF because they don’t have any money for summer but come fall, you will get money to continue, then it’s a price we should be willing to pay. It is better than ending your medical career at this point. Let’s all just hope that DAP goes thru for sure and that they are just as flexible with credit etc. as health express was and at the same time, pray that someone knocks some sense into the government to start fixing things in our own country rather than trying to fix problems in the rest of the world who never even asked for our help to begin with.

I wonder how many students wont be able to go to school this upcoming summer semester. I know quite a number of students that did apply early to teri but were not approved. Seems like alot of students would have to move to the RH and live off the tuition assistance given by the school and the 7 grand given by davenport. Talk about annoying.

This whole economic slow down (not calling it a recession because it officially isnt) sucks major salty chocolate balls.

this does suck big time. Its like you wait all this time to get accepted you are finally there and the great USA market crashes and you can't obtain any money. Ridiculous. Good Luck to all of you.

your an idiot and fool. what about the people who did everything they were suppose to do. do well in class, stay up to date with applying for loans etc. Shouldnt the school do a little more to help these people out. Instead of saying just take a semester off its not the end of the world. Instead, we have people in are school who have withdrawn from over 20 credits of work in just 2 semesters and have money. the school should not help these people at all. If you need to withdrawn from over 20 credits in 2 semesters they shouldnt be in medical school. Instead of lending these stupid people who are going to fail out anyway for tuition and fees, how about they help out the good students who are doing what they are doing pay for tuition, fees and expenses. Tell the bad students to take the semester off, like it would matter anyway since they would probally withdraw from half their classes anway.

I totally agree. A lot of people come here to party and its such a waste. I know it sounds mean but there are students like myself who never failed a class or took time off in which I am trying to start my clinical rotations. They should give priority to the people who have stayed long enough and proved themselves to not be a risk of gambling with their money.

For those needing assistance for summer (may), the only choices are Teri and Davenport...If you waste your time calling FA, they will tell you to do a leave of absence if you cannot come up with any loans. BTW- Teri is no longer accepting any more students. If you are not doing Davenport or its not enough, you're kinda on your own as there is no other financial options.

I agree. ... I never failed a class, passed Step 1 with one shot .. eager to finish rotations .. the loans messed me up .. they should give people priority based on their academic records and allow them to finish what they start.

You need to send in an email like 1 1/2 month ago to tell them how poor you are.. they will send you the application by email... then you complete it and fax it back to them.

Does anyone know much about the Dept. of Educations Direct Student Loan progam and if SMU would be eligible for it? I have read some about what the government is trying to do to ease the "student loan crisis" but it's like anything else in the government...a little hard to sort out what is really happening.

From what I have been told, DAP for fall will be finalized end of may, first of June and cover tuition, fees, and a little bit for some of the housing expenses. I am curious as to how much housing expense though.
