Better (we have shelf exams)- but I would ask the students that transfered because they have first hand experience.

I would agree. SMU has great professors and if you really want to succeed, you can. Many students in 5th who just took the USMLE Step 1 exam passed with no problems. In fact, I don't know of anyone in the 5th semester class that has failed the exam.

the professors at smu have become very good. all of the professors that would give out the exam questions before exam dates are pretty much all gone except for biochem.
School is whatever you made it to be. But having good/ great professors does not hurt. SMU has a very good education level

It's hard to gauge without attending the different institutions and then being able to sit back and wax philosophical.
The only thing that I can talk about is that I feel my fund of knowledge from Basic Science is at least equivalent to other Carib students I've rotated with.

Rotated through many different hospitals- sometimes with carib students and sometimes with US students. Each have difficulty with physical exams and answering similar questions on the wards.
I can honestly say my education level is comparable to U.S students

My experience with my own school so far is that if I do well on my regular exams I do well on shelf exams as well. For the most part, what they teach is similar to what's on shelf. But it's a lot of my own effort, no matter how good (or BAD) a teacher, it's like 30% their effort, 70% yours, wherever you are. Don't know about the other schools- never been there. We got some transfers to Ross, maybe they're on the other forum- they'll know if the grass is greener or not.

exactly..... its in your hands.... you will not be be spoon fed here.... its as simple as if you know your shizzle or not..... some people go to review sessions right before an exam and then.... start studying, while others have their head in a flippin book from day one and are able to ace the exams with no problems.
I've been pretty impressed with our professors so far. I felt that I was prepared enough to know my material for the shelf. But...... they can't teach you everything in one semester, so that's where you have to pony up and read a BRS, etc through and through to be able to do well on the shelf.... In all my classes so far, there has been only one professor that I couldn't stand, all the rest I feel are always there to answer any questions that you may have and really do want you to succeed on the shelf, Step 1, etc.

on a side note..... apparently my intellect for Pt-Dr II was not up to par.... LOL..... my lowest grade from semester 2 was in my flipping Pt-Dr II class. That's right folks, not Neuroscience, not Physiology, not Biochemistry, but Pt-Dr II....... nice........

We get to see her again next semester too, but I hope we see Dr. F more. We had a student transfer in from another carib school coz (s)he didn't like the teaching there, only to fail Physio and PD II at our school. So, I don't know about education level, it may have more to do with the individual.

I don't think there is any compelling evidence for any significant differences in educational effectiveness between the major carib schools. There is little variation in educational approach: they all use the same texts, have a similar curriculum and teach using similar methodologies. Given the similarity, it is hard to believe that the choice of school has a large impact on students' success.
SGU has the best stats but they are the most selective. Thus, we would EXPECT that SGU would have the best USMLE scores and residency placements. There is no good evidence for a 'school effect'.

thats really funny. I knew lots of students that just took PD4 and most of them had positive feelings towards the female instructor and more negative feelings towards the male.
Its fascinating to see how people could have different of opinions.
My advice to all is not to hold any grudges. Just try to have the best most positive experience possible.
I much more prefer to admire or at least respect my professors rather than hate them. Even though some professors make it very easy to hate rather than respect.
hope all are having great vacations.

I tried.... but after 3 weeks of lectures I started to ram my pencil in my eyeball.... so it pretty much went downhill from there.... thank goodness I brought my Ipod down here...
there's more than one female instructor for Pt-Dr, so I don't know if we're talking about the same one.... We had the guy Professor maybe twice.... so I can't say anything about him.....

I missed the review in Pharm and Path reviews because of sickness where student have said that their were shelf questions given as review. Please provide all of the NEW material in the regularly scheduled class so that all can benefit.
