Hey all,
I just found out yesterday that I got accepted for the fall 2008 class and am pretty excited. I have acceptance from AUC as well, and am still waiting to hear back from SGU.
To current Ross students - a honest question
Ross or AUC? Iv been reading up on both and I cant really tell them apart academically..
I know Ross had problems in clinicals a while ago - but I hear the situation has been sorted out, is that true?
Tuition wise , they are the same but St. Maarten's is a lot more expensive considering living costs. Iv lived in enough 3rd world countries to think I can tough it out in Dominica if I can end up saving some debt.
Id love to hear any opinions students undergoing clinicals have as well..
Thanks

I looked into AUC as well, but my deciding factor was that I am from Texas and AUC's curriculum was not accepted by the Texas Medical Board. Ross's is. That said enough about the two schools for me to apply only to Ross. I am finishing up my fourth semester and I can say, honestly, that I don't regret my decision in the least. Ross is a good school, despite some of the whining you will hear from people. Think about where you want to practice and look into how the clinical options are for each school. I know Ross is gaining a lot of spots and even taking over some places that AUC had. I am entering clinicals soon, so I can't tell you what that's like, but from the time on Dominica, I can say that Ross was the right choice for me. Good luck in making your decision.

People are going to tell you to search this topic, and for detailed answers I would tell you the same.
But to tell you straight up, w/o detailed reasonings I would say Ross over AUC, and St George over Ross

I would agree with brob311.

just to clarify, AUC (as well as SGU) are on the tmb's equivilency list now as well... there was a 6month period where ross was the only one.

I have a friend at AUC. The island is much nicer than Dominica and their classes are much smaller. The curriculum is more or less the same (but I am not aware of how the clinical part is). AUC you spend 5th semester on the Island (Ross you can go back to the states). Ross and AUC will give you the same place eventually

Thanks for the replies
Yea the small class size is definitely the draw at AUC and it does allow licensure in all 50 states (so i guess the TX issue is old).
My concern is the expensive cost of living on St. Maartens compared to Dominica.
My problem with Ross is the fact that if you fail a class, you repeat the entire semester which is somewhat scary. While I understand I need to be dedicated enough to studying to avoid that and it probably wouldnt happen, if I did manage to somehow do so, that is a lot of time and money wasted.

Also Ross's tuition is a little bit more expensive than AUC. SO in the end the more expensive housing maybe offset. But that depends on what type of apartments you get at either island. Look at the School that will make you happy the most. I had a choice between Ross and AUC and chose Ross. It was a personal decision and so it should be for you too. The few advantages that AUC has are clinical rotations in UK (plz conifrm) and more developed island.

Darn near the same...
BUT
I just didn't want my diploma to read "CARIBBEAN" in big letters as the focus point/name of the school when it hangs on my wall in my office.
I am cool with it saying "Ross"
even if it says Dominica in smaller letters - at least I don't have to spell out what the acronym AUC stands for to my family/friends/colleagues.
I really wish it said "Harvard" but hey, I'll take what I can get.
Just my own petty selfish narcissistic thoughts.
But I think when we are spending $200K, we can be this juvenile should we please.

You may want to check this out more carefully. Very few of the new clinical sites/spots that Ross has been adding are greenbook. Some states (Texas I beleive) will only accept green (LCGME approved) rotations.

True, Texas will only accept greenbook cores, unless you rotate with LCME or AOA (U.S. students) at the same facility and can have their school prove it.
Electives will have to be green if it is done before the required 130 week minimum.
See Form J I attached from the TMB.

I was accepted to both AUC and Ross. I ended up choosing AUC for several reasons, to include class size, island and clinical site locations. However, the biggest factor was Ross's current clinical issue. I don't want to end up ready to start my rotations and have nowhere to go. That being said, clinicals could be a problem at any school but SGU, but the fact that Ross's problems are so pronounced led me elsewhere.
As far as my diploma saying "caribbean" in big letters, I am fine with it as long as M.D. is there too! Plenty of great doctors have graduated from all of the "big 3".

If your worried about the word Caribbean being on your diploma maybe you should reconsider the whole thing and retake the mcat, classes, get new letters of rec etc.... and try to get into a US school
Your fooling yourself if you think that colleagues, and lay people, wont know where Ross or SGU is.....
And who the heck cares what other people think anyways, at the end of the day your still a M.D.

Ross may not provide the "Pedigree" to obtain a competitive fellowship but you will have no problem finding a "job" starting at $200k/yr + bennies after residency.
