So I took step 1 today (Deadline is April 18th) If I don't pass SMU will be kicking me along with a few others out because we were unable to pass Step 1 within the given time period.

GOODBYE SMU!

ummm, I'm sure other schools will accept you. You had 12 months, 3 national board semesters. So i am not sure how you can be blaming SMU for forcing u to take ur step.

Sounds like a lot of kids who started off with me at SMU in JAN 04.... these guys/gals partied non stop on the island, took FOREVER to take the exam and failed it a couple times and were mad at the school for not giving them ACGME accred rotations. They all still party it up in Atlanta and are studying for Step 1 or Step 2 (after finally passing Step 1)

You'll see it all the time.. I really hope SMU sticks to its guns about setting a deadline to take the exam.

good luck md999, i wish you the best, you gave it your all and deserve more than the party animals. i can't wait to get started, i want to give it my all...after getting such a wonderful opportunity to go to med school and know that you have to do your best to make it anywhere, i don't know why people would waste all their time partying.

ppl i know in your situation (OP) from Ross/SMU/AUC transferred out to schools like Xavier/Windsor so that they can complete their clinical years w/o taking/passing step. a few of these students passed step1 during their 3rd/4th yr, a few are planning to take it after they graduate.

keep your head up! some people are just not good test takers, but it doesn't mean you won't be an excellent doctor.

best of luck

Your results aren't even out yet, so you might be stressing for nothing. But if it comes out bad, we all fail at things in life sometimes. I say learn from your mistakes, and like AmericanIMG said, some people transfer. You worked this long and this hard and passed all your classes up to this point so you obviously have the potential in you. Examine honestly with yourself WHY you delayed the step; was it test anxiety, the wrong crowd, the wrong atmosphere, couldn't focus etc? Correct that, pass your step and graduate with your MD from SMU or another school. 20 yrs from now, this could be the speed bump in your life or the mountain you didn't climb. It's up to you. Stay away from any judgmental unconstructive people. Your goal is to pass step and be an MD, you can still do it!
