Hi,
Does anyone know if it's possible to switch rotation placement? I want midwest (Michigan), but am being placed in NY. Do I need to talk with or email the dean? My clinical coord cannot help me. Any ideas? I have been requesting MI, and am really upset about being placed somewhere else. I know that rotations everywhere are the same, but I have family and financial reasons to want MI.
Thanks!

is this for Aug? or May?
if May- its probably a little late in the game- they usually entertain appeals in the beginning of april. Not sure what the date is for Aug- probably July.
I don't understand why your clinical coordinator can't help you- she should know about the appeal process and the dates.
whether you will get it? well...

I knew less than a month before starting clinicals that I would be going to Michigan instead of NY/CT. Someone dropped out and that is all it took. I can understand your being upset, but try not to be too much. Clinicals go soooo fast, and depending on which hospital you get, you might have to move for fourth year anyway. You can look forward to doing a residency close to home if things don't work out for clincials in Michigan, and the day will be here before you know it!
P.S. I know someone who did 3rd year in NJ and 4th year in Michigan. One way to get there before residency....

MI is really tough they have very limited spots and it seems like a lot of people want to go there. I know there was a lottery for the spots for the May rotations, and before that they said it was first come first serve, meaning if you're the first to pass your step1 and get all the paper work in then you got the spot. That required for people to rush their step1 studying which isn't a great thing if you need to study a lot.

My husband and I are in the lottery for MI for the May Clinicals. We will know May 2nd who goes and who gets Danbury. We need MI because the price of living in CT or NY is just too much. We cant have room mates to share the cost of rent. I think that every students situation should be looked at. So good luck to everyone waiting to hear about MI.

I think there are plenty of couples that do clinicals in NY and do ok financially.

My initial placement was Danbury also, and instead I went to St. Joseph Mercy in Pontiac, MI and St. Joseph's in Paterson, NJ. Some students who accepted (and enjoyed) their Danbury placement lived in New Rochelle and commuted to St. Joseph's in Paterson for certain cores/electives. Everyone made it, and if you go there so will you (as Dunsoon suggested). Like I indicated, try not to get too worked up about a certain training location. There are many ways to get where you want, and it will all work out and be over before you know it. And that part about making contacts at a certain place for residency, well, I matched somewhere else completely. What an adventure! It's been wonderful!

Just asking, How do you pay for the $4.00 per gallon gas and then a car payment to commute back and forth?? My husband and I also have a 3 year old we have to think about. We have more monthly bills then just the average single or married student. In MI, we can get a house a block from the hospital. But we go were we are told and make the best out of it, Right?

can you not appeal for another site other than Soundshore?
there are places where you can live in hospital housing (the rent tends to be a little lower, though the apts aren't the greatest) so there is no commute. Or at least you can use public transportation...
gas in NJ is actually the cheapest in the country (~3.10/gal! woo whoo!!:D).
GL with getting MI- the rent there certainly is much cheaper!!

I agree with you that the Danbury/Sound Shore option is not a good fit for your situation so I wouldn't have applied for it. I would look into options in New Jersey or New York if you don't get Michigan. Good luck!

I have been placed at MI (st. johns--i think that's the only one we have there now anyways) for the fall. As for whether it starts in aug or sept is anyone's guess. I know that there are 16 of us that have been placed there. I talked with a clinical advisor, and she said that as long as we have our scores in before the start date, then the placements should be pretty well set. Of course things can change. I think your best bet is to let them know you want MI and ask to be first on a waiting list or something in case one of those slots opens due to failing term 6, step 1, or takes a LOA. Later, good luck
Andrew
PS There are lots of good neighborhoods in NJ that will have you paying not so much for housing. You will end up making it work no matter what happens. worst case, you can get more private loans thru tuitionanswer.com
