Hi Can someone tell me the pros and cons of each. Which one you think is better and why. I understand alot of people dont seem to like manipal but post are from 3 years ago is it still that bad there? Also mci says this about manipal " Council has recommended withdrawal of recognition of the degree and stoppage of admissions to Cent. Govt.". What does this mean? That students graduting with MBBS there will not be accepted by the government of india as doctors? If this is the case why is manipal still accepted through out india as a good college.

any new info would be nice. I understand NRI may have it easier to get in but that doesnt mean we arent willing to work hard or are bad people. Ya so Indians had to worker harder to get into manipal but doesn't that also mean in the long run they will be better doctors and be more rewarding for them. I understand that NRIs are often taking the cop out way but maybe we made some mistakes and now that we have learned from them. We may be going to help humanity and be good doctors not just for a free ride. I am saying all this because I just want honest answers not answers to discourage NRIs or to scare us. I understand life will be hard when we go to india. But for those of you who think we have it easy, you can think of the hardships we will face as our punishment. But as fellow humans I hope you can help people like with me with honest answers. Im sorry for this but for the past 2 hours i have been reading discouraging email after discouraging email about manipal yet it is still held so highly in india.i dont understand how this can be if the school is so bad.

Sorry I can't address your questions about comparing KMC-Manipal and KMC-Mangalore. But I can address the MCI "recommendation for derecognition" issue.

The Medical Council of India has "recommended" to the Indian Ministry of Health to "derecognize" KMC, which if enacted would be the equivalent of withdrawing accreditation of KMC. Per Dr. R. Pai, President of Manipal University ( I spoke with him in our NY office and on a boat in Manipal druing an evening party) MCI is trying to use its political muscle to strong arm KMC for money. Originally I thought it was tied to NRI and other non-Indian students enrolling in Manipal University. However its apparently much simpler than that: Dr. Pai simply doesn't want to "play the game" with MCI's politics. MCI doesn't "recognize" Indian Medical Schools. The Indian Ministry of Health does. And they have not taken MCI's "recommendation". One of my students actually called the Ministry of Health and asked them about it and they pointed out the fact that a stamp has been issued with the face of TMA Pai, founder of KMC. And they have no intention of "derecognizing" KMC.

What does this mean? Nothing.

For a few months back in 2002(?) KMC students were having trouble registering with ECFMG for USMLE. But that issue was resolved by Manipal University. Now its simply what it has always been: a toothless threat.

I understand but the Manipal website itself talks about being accepted by MCI in the 1950s and then if you go to the Indian Health Ministry's site it talks about looking at the MCI site. Also certain things the university follows such as attendance policy seems ones established by MCI. Seems sort of contradictory. What happens say if the Ministry decides to agree with MCI what happens to the people enrolled in the program. Has their time in the college become worthless?
