Hello,
I was accepted for September 2008 semester. I have many questions but the most important is about the school dorm:
1 - How many will be in the dorm?
2 - How far is the dorm from school?
3 - Will there be special room for husband/wife students?
Thanks,
huydp

1. they are not 'dorms' as the traditional sense of what you might expect in University...these are houses...so depending on how many bedrooms/house...it might be 1 roommate - 4 roommates...everyone gets own room, share kitchen/livingroom
2. location, depends, changes each semester...i know that housing is shifting closer to the new campus next semester as the md4 batch starts to pack up and leave the island for good...but the school does provide free bus to and from school each day...so you will be told of the timing of that bus when you get to the island
3. talk to the school when you get to the island. the do make arrangements as such if you come a few weeks before the semester starts. so keep that in mind.

Hello Fry,
Thanks for the info, much appreciated. That's what I thought but I wasn't sure. My fiancee and I were accepted last week, she's most concerned with the dorm. We're from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Nice to meet you.
Thanks,

Hello,
I have more questions for my new enrollment at Windsor:
1 - What is the passing rate for ECFMG?
2 - Does Windsor prepare us for that test?
3 - How good is USLME preparation at Windsor?
I'm just curious, not trying to put down WIndsor or anything. I'm new so just a little bit curious.
Thanks,
huydp
continue your questions in one thread. dont clutter the forum please. thank you.
1. no idea. the school does not keep track.
2. no. its up to you...the school give you material, its up to you if you want to study.

Hello,
This is my last set of questions:
1 - When does classes start in September? It wasn't mentioned during my interview.
2 - Is the school within walking distance of the nearby beaches, markets and Basseterre?
3 - Where approximately does the school located on the island map?
Thanks,

1) What's the minimum required GPA and MCAT score for Windsor for September 2008?
2) I'm from Canada and just wanted to know..is the standard of living similar to that in Canada or totally different? Do you guys always have hot water or does it become cold when you shower?

We just got our acceptance letter yesterday and already mailed the $500 deposit. We heard that school starts on September 12th. We will be on the island late August in order to adjust to the new lifestyle...probably rent a hotel before the school allow us to check into our room. My fiancee hopes that we can get a room to ourself with private bath.:)

I just want to know if a 3.125 average is good enough to get into windsor med school, also how big are the class sizes. Lastly what type of questions do they ask on the interview-I am very scared!!! please help me
By the way, friend already is working in the states- she went there straight from high school.

Just wanted to give you a heads up....that many states require 60 undergrad credit hours for licensure . What state is you friend working in?
As far as your original question goes...your GPA should be fine....but in the end at admissions committee makes the decision.

I know a few WSOM students that got a residency in OHIO that went straight from high school and entered the Pre-Med/MD program.
Again, for the millionth time, this is not the same as obtaining licensure.

Hi everyone,
MD1 student for Sept 08' here. Just wanted to say hi. I can't wait to start! I've been reading a lot of the threads on here, but still have a few questions.
-Anyone have any opinion as to if I should get a Mac or a PC (laptop) for school?
-How many days before class can I move into school housing? (realistically speaking)
-Does it take more than 2 days to setup internet access? Will I need bluetooth wireless or Ethernet cable?
-Are there pre-paid sim cards on the island for sale? cost?
-How much cash will I need to bring with me to school?
P.S. I am a very clean, quiet, studious female from New Jersey. I do like to play sports, go out in town and have fun when I can too! I saw there is an option for requesting roommates on the housing form. If anyone would like to get to know me and maybe room together please send me a private message!
Thanks a lot!

Welcome to Windsor...and the forum..
-Anyone have any opinion as to if I should get a Mac or a PC (laptop) for school? Your choice...
-How many days before class can I move into school housing? (realistically speaking) 1 week
-Does it take more than 2 days to setup internet access? Will I need bluetooth wireless or Ethernet cable? If you go with the Cable they can do it in a couple of days...C&W takes some time....
-Are there pre-paid sim cards on the island for sale? cost? Yes..Bring your unlocked phone..35 EC
-How much cash will I need to bring with me to school? Bring your ATM card...and convert everything to EC as soon as you get a chance.
Thanks a lot!

One more question on housing:
If I choose to stay on the island for that few weeks in between semesters, can I stay in the school housing? I would hate to think that every few months the students would need to pack up everything and move around...
P.S. Do you think I should start a new thread in regard to find a good roommate? or just repost it again later if I get no responds?
Thank you! :D

yes u will be able to stay in school housing. if you decide to go home during the semester break you do not have to move out and move in to a different place. you just leave your stuff in your place (don't leave valuables)
start a new thread if you like.
pm if you have any more questions.

You will have to start in Pre Med.

i do not know the current situation of dorms on the island as I finished there quite a while ago. i wouldnt recommend bringing expensive electronics to the island. credit cards work fine on the island. i am not sure about debit cards.

Hi, I am from NY. I recieved my Associate Degree in Biology with GPA of 3.3. I have done all of my sciences. I am recieving my B.A. Degree in Psychology at this semester, May 2008. The current GPA is 3.0 and its going up due to good grades I am recieving so far. I took MCAT twice already but I did poorly. Got 11 and then 12. I have volunteered a total of 380 hours in the hospital at different depatments.
Is there chance that I will get in the MD1 for Setember 2008?
If so, what is the deadline for September 2008?
Also, I will be able to work in NY?

I would suggest you apply early because spots tend to fill up fast. Overall I think you are a competitive applicant.
However, since you have poor MCAT scores, I think during medical school you should work on your test-taking skills and improve on your deficiencies by zoning in on your weaknesses. Your GPA reflects that you understand material well, but your MCAT portrays your inabiliity to apply that material. If you work on that, you will be able to succeed not only in medical school, but on future USMLE and other board exams as well.
Hope this helps.

You might find it surprising that 300+ kids do Basic Sciences at Windsor without having loans. Most come from working class parents and live on a budget. At some school the students borrow more than they need and do not realize that they will be swimming in it for the next 7-10+ years.
There are no loans until it's in writing...THE END!

Hi,
Is it too late to apply for September 2008 as of MD 1? I just received my B.A. degree. Done all of my sciences. When is the last date to apply for September 2008? Two more questions, will I be able to work in New York? And, how many states have approved Windsor? I am saying this because I don't understand the Green Book system:confused:.
Thanks
znazem

Yes, you can still apply.
As for New York, from what I understand, you can't do over a few weeks of clinicals in New York, and you can get a license in New York once you've completed residency in another state, so in the end after clinicals, and residency.. Yeah, you should be able to go work in NY, and approved in? None. But approval only applies to clinicals I believe? But, Hey! Atleast is not banned in any states!
Someone else should confirm this, I'm not 100% sure..

I was normal. I studied hard and when I took the exam, I felt confident about it. The scores, I don't know how they graded. But that's not an important for me as long as I can get in the Windsor Univesity. They say that MCAT is not required. Plus, the most important thing is that I believe in myself and I know for sure that I am going to be a great doctor. How? I have potential to believe myself. hi guys, i am coming from canada with grade 12, and going to the premed program and then the md program at windsor. My question is will I be able to work at New York and in England or not and will I have to do some type of test to work there. My family is planning to move there that is why i am asking.
Also, I know that many med schools pay a student while he/she is doing the residency program, does windsor do that and if so how much per hour??
thanks

I was normal. I studied hard and when I took the exam, I felt confident about it. The scores, I don't know how they graded. But that's not an important for me as long as I can get in the Windsor Univesity. They say that MCAT is not required. Plus, the most important thing is that I believe in myself and I know for sure that I am going to be a great doctor. How? I have potential to believe myself. Yes, I hope to get in and then my track to become a great doctor will be smooth one. See you guys down there once I get in.
Good to see that you believe in yourself. It's pretty much all you got. If you did so poorly on the MCAT, the USMLE will not be easier, it will be much more difficult.

but one question: how did you manage to get an 11, or 12???? thats like super duper low.......were you high that day or something?????

I am so sorry but I didn't understand the first two questions:eek:. I am indeed a hard worker, self determined and much more. I understand the issue of having poor grades on the MCAT twice, but that doesn't me that I can't do good on USMLE. It only tells me that I must and indeed must study harder and the best way to do it is start working and studying much earlier; perhaps in this summer. Yes I do trust and believe in myself or other wise I can't do anything.
I just graduated from Queens College with B.A. in Psychology with GPA of 3.266. I graduated from Kingsborough with A.S. in Biology with GPA of 3.333. I volunteered at Coney Island Hospital for approximately 382 hours in Occupitional Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Emergency Room. I took MCATs twice and got 11 and 12. I am a tutor, tutoring college level Chemistry and college level of Math.
I don't know but based on my status, will I get in the Windsor University School of Medicine?

your chances of obtaining a residency in the US are very limited since you are a high school graduate. Most states require you to have undergraduate experience with the bare minimum of 1 year Biology, 1 year Chemistry Organic and Inorganic, Physics, and possibly some others. Windsor University is not yet NY approved. If you want to go to England you will have to write a PLAB examination.
Windsor does not pay you during residency. It is the hospital that you do a residency at that will pay you on a salary basis, not per hour.
Please do not post ignorant messages again. Do a search before.

yeah, but what about for grocery shopping, etc. etc. is there a bus (other than the school service) and how infrequent? - thnx.
1. they are not 'dorms' as the traditional sense of what you might expect in University...these are houses...so depending on how many bedrooms/house...it might be 1 roommate - 4 roommates...everyone gets own room, share kitchen/livingroom
2. location, depends, changes each semester...i know that housing is shifting closer to the new campus next semester as the md4 batch starts to pack up and leave the island for good...but the school does provide free bus to and from school each day...so you will be told of the timing of that bus when you get to the island
3. talk to the school when you get to the island. the do make arrangements as such if you come a few weeks before the semester starts. so keep that in mind.

As a permanent resident you can travel to the islands without any other documentation. You only get 6 months at the time.. So what I do is go for the 4 months the semester takes then come back home for two weeks then go back.. you can travel as you please, as long as you make sure you are not out of the states for more than 6 month without returning.
However, what some permanent resident students do is send an application to the US immigration requesting permission to stay out of the country longer. But that is money and time wasted, at least for me, because after the semester is over, i cant wait to come home.

Thats all you need, 1. your green card and 2. your passport. It doesn't matter which airport you come in from. On my way back I have been in Puerto Rico, Newark NJ, Baltimore MD, Dulles DC, etc.
The only questions they always ask me are "how long you been outside the country and what is your occupation?" answers: four months and student...
The most trouble I have had in the airport has been moving all my bags from one station to another.. You'll be fine. If you still have any doubts just call your local airport. They will tell you the exact same thing I just did.

Are the rooms on twin share basis or it's on us how to choose? What about the meals? One has to eat junk food daily at restaurants??Or the hotel has inbuilt restaurant or any other arrangements for food?
How early we are supposed to reach the hotel and will they allow us to live in the hotel 4-5 days before beginning of the regular schedule? And suppose the semester is beginning on 15th sept. should we pay for the hotel for September month for full month fares or they will charge only half?? Does Windsor inform you of when to pay the tuition fee. The lady I called - Lonna, said they send e-mails out for when to send it. Theres only one more month left before school starts, am I suppose to just guess when to send it?

200 all going to MD1 or does that include transfer students to other semesters?
I am taking transfer into 3rd .. and my 6th sense is indicating that you are transferring as well to 5th sem in carbondale right ?? there is one more person (may be more) who are taking transfer to 5th just look down to few more recent reply you will find it.

thats weird it says "to be able to post e-mail addresses your post count must be 20 or greater. you currently have 15 posts." thats a weird rule. anywho - im going to put spaces in between because they don't let me type the e-mail address. there r no actual spaces so write the e-mail address without the spaces.

what is a tri band phone??? can I bring a unlocked sidekick??? do they have phones like sidekicks and blackberry with AIM on them but different companies???
ShinAkuma135
08-04-2008, 02:14 PM
sidekick works. its a world phone, so you should have no problems. if you get another phone just see if it mentions how many frequencies it supports (ex: 850 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, and 1900 MHz), and if it supports 3 out of the 4 it should work just fine.

and i believe someone else here told me the prepaid phones over there are like the old regular nokia ones, so im guessing those don't have aim.

Hey Guys,
Where do you go to acquire the police certificate, the school requires? I have been to several police station in my area and they all seem to NOT HAVE A CLUE. They just keep telling me to go to a different station, i'm tired of wasting gas just driving in circles.
The information is greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks.

you can go to those private background check companies, do a search to find the closest one to you, or have the police clerk type a signed letter saying you have no criminal background

I have booked my tickets to St.Kitts through St.Marteen . I have Indian passport and have US visa. The travel agent told me I do not need a visa if I transit through St.Marteen . But I was told by some people not to travel St.Marteen with out a visa.
Has anybody travelled through this place?
I have to cancel and re book my tickets which are very expensive.
Any suggestions?

Actually i thought Anatomy was harder(i hate memorizing stuff like muscle names etc) than Physiology .. Depends on individual preference i guess... I would suggest that you relax before the semester starts... Reading books is not a waste of time but this is the time to enjoy with your family.... Goodluck..

Im sure someone already asked this question, but it was in 05... so i was wondering if someone can help me out. Frigate Bay.. is that a hotel or a dormitory? Because when i google it, it seems like a resort.. so im unsure. Also, if it is a dorm, how early do you suggest i arrive in order to get it, from what i read, it seems like the best dorming option. I am booking my flight for Sept 9th. Is that far enough in advance? Thanks so much!
