View Full Version : So what's up with all the Ross hate?

I am just curious if this is true for all med schools or something about Ross in particular. I been lurking this forum and saw a handful of people try to prove a point that Ross is a terrible school. I am sure all med school (all schools for that matter) have something good and bad to offer, but why spread the hate onto newcomers?

posts like this one initiate the type of discussion you are referring to. your curiousity does not serve anybody anything except yourself, so please continue lurking.
ignorance might be bliss to you but its not to me. I actually want to know if there is some valid reason why people should not go to Ross or its just some disgruntle students who didn't get into to their top choice residency spots.

don't wanna say it, don't wanna say it.....do a search...oh darn how did that come out :D:D
P.S. My decision to attend is based on three people currently in Ross. One is third year (i have clinical perspective also), one is 4th semester and one is in 5th semester Miami. These people would not lie to me, they are family. I only heard about problems here, which maybe true, but not widespread as it seems.

You must be pretty bad at lurking if you cant figure it out on your own... do us all a favor and do a search so we dont have to see countless posts saying the same thing over and over and over again...

Since the inception of internet forums on caribbean medical schools, Ross has been bashed. When I was researching in 2000-01, I read the same things that are being said now. It has NEVER changed. Did it stop me from going? NO! Now, eight years later I am almost done with my residency after having graduated from Ross. I am sure glad I did not let the haters negatively persuade me. Yes, Ross has issues. BUt if you work hard and keep your head down, you will make it thru just like every one of the thousands of graduates before you. Good luck with your decisions.

I haven't failed a single class, never attended MERP, passed the COMP on the first try, and have a GPA above the average mean. How come I hate this school and will not recommend it to anyone? Ross is not that great don't blame it the ppl that failed.

No school is perfect, and things could be better, but if you work hard and realize that Ross gives you a chance to become an MD, then work hard. A lot of people that write negative posts have had bad experiences.. living in a foreign country and going to med school will make you a different person. some people can't adjust, the list of things could be endless and it is very personal.. so don't just read what's here and decide if you are going to ross or not.. value md will not include all the students that go to Ross or to any other medical school... good luck...... i am a 4th year and I've had a great time..

Fellow classmates were accepted into Michigan, one loves it, one hates it, one dropped out to work in a lab. If we were on a US Allopathic forum all the comments would be them same. I am also betting that Dominica is far nicer area than say a student living in downtown Baltimore attending Hopkins.
From personal experience, it can't be any worse than Detroit (where I am originally from) and hey, it doesn't snow there. I am stoked.
If I was actually worried about what people thought, said, discussed on public bulletin boards, then I might stop wearing my purple Speedo.
Ah, my purple Speedo is gonna love the beaches in Dominica...

Don't get me wrong, I'm not here to bash Ross, but Dominica isn't Detroit. Bet they don't have Dengue there. Also, I hope you're not expecting white sandy beaches like you see in the Bahamas. Instead you get Coconuts. I enjoyed it, and I am glad that I am back. I might even go again someday. Be realistic about what you are going to experience, and you won't be shocked when you land at the "airport". Hope you enjoy it also.

Now, as far as this thread, leo72 whats bad about Dominica? Detroits pretty rough. I don't think anyone expects white sandy beaches and cabanna boys walking around (unless 911med is there with his purple speedo lol) carrying maragaritas...although that would be nice right now:toast:

Dengue Fever - disease caused by the flavivirus (spread by infected arthopods), something that i havent heard about for YEARS....i only heard of one person getting it down here....meanwhile u guys exaggerate soo much about this dengue crap.....geeez, soon u'll say america has no diseases...its only in the caribbean!!!

ooohh even better... I like the way you think!
I think it's awesome you three are excited about moving down here. But, I highly recommend not OVER psyching yourself. I'm not saying Dominica is terrible, but psychologically speaking, doing that to yourself will ultimately lead to some form of disappointment. Also, no one on this island will certainly hold a gun to your head, but they won't hesitate to put a machete to your neck and politely ask for your laptop. :)

Ah well, you're definitely a statistical outlier then. You'll surely have no problems acclimating to island life. I've been here for a bit more than 3 months and I'm still adjusting to the fact that all water sources are unusable during a heavy rainstorm.

Well u can always do the watering collecting thing when the weather channel says "rain" like how it is today!!!
but hey remember small island, small techniques, if rain falls heavy rivers flow harder and disrupt the soil so water being collected for purification and distillation get disturbed as well....
i mean life everywhere is hard, its just about learning to adjust temporarily...
good luck!!
But for real, its wise not to expect a lot then u wont be disappointed when u dont see sky scrappers and the whole lot....

It all depends on your perspective.
I'm assuming you really wanted to be a physician and that is why you ultimately chose to go to Ross. Ross is giving you that opportunity. Most people don't come here because they could have gotten into U.S. schools and just chose to live on a little island known as Dominica. They came here because they didn't have other options towards the route of becoming a physican (perhaps even including St. George's).
Every school has its problems. Had you not ended up at Ross, you probably would have been at another Carib school and would have had either similar problems or perhaps even more severe, worse ones (such as not being able to practice in certain states).
Just my perspective...take it for what it's worth or for nothing at all.
By the way guys, I love the Rossip idea. :)

butters, its really helpful to know an objective view of what to expect and the kind of hard work is needed. You, jim and other alumni on this forum have really helped us be happy about our decision to goto Ross. I refuse to belittle Ross, at the same time I don't expect the same type of treatment as a US schools. The positive of all this hardship is that it prepares you for life in general. Instead of complaining I choose to learn from it.
Hope Rossip brings the good people of Ross together. We need some unity.

argazul...you have that exciting and hopeful look that most accepted students who have not even lived one day on the island have. jcu made a good point in advising not letting your excitement of coming down to the island and starting med school cloud your reality. You must expect the unexpected, and by unexpected I mean hardships, or else you will be in a helpless culture shock.
I lived in Hawaii in a small town 15 minutes from the North Shore for my first year of college, and I thought that living simple far away from home would serve as good preparation for Dumpinica...I was wrong, they were nothing alike. I adjusted quickly while I was down there, and I don't think the experience was completely awful like some have said. However, b/c I prepared myself for the worst, I was able to deal with the trials that the Dom had:
1. no power every Sunday for a semester
2. Lack of good food -> E coli build-up in GI
3. cut-throat mentality of students
4. losing almost 100 students to repeating or failing out in first semester
5. Some locals who don't prefer you there
6. Landlords trying to screw you
7. Liat
8. Liat
9. Liat
10 Dengue
11 poor healthcare provided by school clinic
12 "mudbaths" after heavy rains
13 students getting mugged for laptops and money
14 A school that expects you to get by on your own, and if you can't there is always AUA
15 crazy transport drivers that try to screw you out of money
16 all the commodities of the US..gone
17 food
18 food
19 food
20 did I say Liat
21 Bathrooms that would make a subway station bathroom look like Marriott bathroom
etc, etc, etc, etc
But there are some positives too:
1. laid back
2. everything close by
3. sunny weather everyday
4. lots of outdoor stuff to do
5. good fish
6. good scuba/snorkeling
7. blask sand beach by the school
8. basic sciences to prepare you for Step
9. entertaining Rossip everyday...especially at after-mini parties
10. Ross' repuation among Carib school
11. Some nice locals

Thanks for the warning. But I feel that having lived in a third world country for 18 years before coming to US, I won't have much problems adjusting. From the list of negatives no.s 1., 2., 11., 12., 13., 15-19, and 21, I have already experienced. Another thing that I feel would help me out is I will be traveling with two close friends who have experienced similar conditions. I also know one person in the 4th semester at Ross and one in the third year, so I have a very realistic view of what to expect.
Not everything is paradise, but there are enough positives that I can have the motivation to deal with the negatives. In the end my philosophy is work hard and not complain.
