So i am getting ready to apply for fourth year electives and I keep reading observership - NO HANDS ON! The latter is usually capitalized. How much truth can be put to this, how can one do a 4 week rotation and be evaluated without ever seeing a patient ?

The way I understand it, rotations labeled as observerships are for foreign doctors (those graduated from med school in their home countries) who wish to document US clinical experience to improve their CVs for a US residency. As an SGU student you have been granted permission to interact with patients in a clinical setting under supervision and so you need to sign up for a real elective.

fla isn't very IMG friendly when it comes to rotations-i vaguely remember reading somewhere that if you get someone at UF to sponsor you then they will let you do electives there, but there was new legislation in fla that requires a school affliation for student rotations, both core and electives, which is probably why you can only do electives at CCf and Miami childrens
but nyladoo is right- observerships are more for FMGs to get USCE(but even then programs will specify that they want hands on experience).
