this is probably a very elementry question but here goes:

is the reason for the differences in male and female red blood cell measurements such as Hb concentration and packed cell volume simply because males have a higher erythrocyte count? or is it because they have more blood? or is it something else entirely?!

cheers

Menstruation every month is one explanation.

testosterone also has a stimulatory effect on erythrocyte production.

reason is that males have higher BMR % "basal metabolic rate" than females
that is because males have a larger muscle mass which as any other tissue needs oxygen so blood content and hemoglobin % is increased to perforate those muscles.

erythrocytes are the medical term for red blood cells which are just a mass of hemoglobin surounded by a membrane that permits gas exchange from inner and outer enviorment .
