For those of you who read these threads on a daily basis, pondering "what are my chances?" Let my good news bring a smile and perhaps a bit of confidence to your day...

If you want to be a doctor, you can; you will.

I graduated third in my class in high school. I was a national science scholar. I have wanted to go to medical school since I was in the third grade and I pointed out a zygomatic on a dilapidated skeleton.
Rural, poor school - think Eminem 8 Mile meets the farm.
No one in my family is a doctor.
My brother and I are first generation college graduates.

I went to the right school - a large public school synonymous with cranking out doctors, scientists, and victors. Perhaps one of the top science programs in the country.

As an athlete, I focused on varsity swimming and not grades. To be honest, even though I was a big fish in a small pond at my high school (pardon the pun), the academics at this large university (biochemistry) were tough. Everyone seemed to be so much better prepared than myself.

Ended up with a GPA that you would be embarassed to tell your friends, let alone your parents. Don't ask, I won't tell you.

Never even thought about medical school.
Dreams were shattered - or so I thought.

I began working for a local pharma company and years passed, work was fine, but I always knew that I had missed my calling.

Took an MCAT class at night, did ok for an old guy that had been out of school for 6 years. Enrolled in a post-bac program and did reasonably well until I ran out of cash and had to return to the workforce. Applied to a few offshore schools somewhere along the way - was given a few nice phone calls, offers for their post-bac programs, but overall nothing.

A few years passed and everyday I pondered why I would let something so important to me get away.

Applied again and really put thought and effort into my statement.

Today I received a phone call from the assoc. dean at Ross welcoming me to the May class. It was a phone call I had been waiting to hear since graduating college in 1999.

You have no idea the power of that phone call after waiting for such a long time, wondering "what if?"

I almost thought it was an April Fools joke.

I was shaking when I called to let me parents know... keep in mind, I am a 32 year old man.

For those of you who will read this - perhaps you are already in, perhaps you are thinking about it, perhaps you are just dreaming "what if?

Realize that life is NOT from Point A to Point B.
It is what you choose to do in-between those two points.

Never give up.

Ross is a crap hole andyou will be demoralized once you set foot in the airport and the island.

Trust me. Try SABA, AUC, or St. George.

Rejection just means you need to try a bit harder.
Acceptance means you have to go to WalMart and buy a huge suitcase.

For people that say Dominica is poor, dirty and substandard, I grew up outside of Detroit.

LOL, i mean sometimes i just get fed up with all the negativity u know.everyday about 40 something ppl in here bashing the school, yet still Ross is still overflowing with 1st sem students and MERP rides with about 70 something every semester...i mean u'd think they wud shut up already....now on to better things.....NEXT Month Ya'll!!!

Try not to listen to the negativity. I got accepted to Ross and AUC and my gut was telling me to go to Ross. So I'll see you guys in a month. I'm sure I'll get a lot of negative comments but who cares. The school's reputation speaks for it self. Half the people who complain about ross don't even attend the school.

"Ross is a tough place to be, but what doesn't kill you will make you stronger. I started this past Sept and there was 400 students in my class (including people who had to repeat a semester), we lost about 60 people going from 1st to 2nd semester. Hell, some people went home within the 1st week b/c they didn't like the island at all. You can get through it if you work hard and from what Ross grads have said when they come back to speak, they feel just as prepared, if not more, than many of the US med students. A couple years ago Ross has the only student to get a perfect score on Step 1. As for rotations, if you want the facts, talk to Dr. Chu. Ya, we lost a couple of spots to SGU, but he said students didn't like those rotations. While losing those spots, he gained the entire Michigan program and about 75 other spots. The hospitals that deal with Ross have said they "want more students like the ones from Ross." In other words, I don't regret coming here."

WOW!! :( so disappointing. Congrats once again to Ross students. I work in all of the hospitals here in Arizona and all the doctors I have spoken with about Ross has nothing but good things to say about them and are happy to work with them. One of them is the chief of Pediatric Cardiology at a teaching hospital and the other was the chief of staff at another teaching facility.

There will always be people who are going to say negative things, but they really don't exsist if you dont acknowledge them. We should all feel very happy about our accomplishments! I have friends at US schools and carib schools and they are all the same. You never know what the admission board is looking for each year so matriculating students vary. We are all (or most of us at least) are bright and intelligent because if we weren't we wouldn't be on our way to becoming a doctor:D

So with that said. Good luck to everyone and I am very happy to be going to Ross even if others have a problem with it. My school does not define the type of doctor I am going to be I DO!! The only people who care about what school they go to are the ones who get caught up in the prestige hype...We are all going to be doctors and we should be focused on improving the health of others and changing lives, not worried about what school is better. The best school to me is the one who is working on minimizing the health care disparity and giving hope not negativity.

I read a thread it is about 2.8 GPA and average of 15, 5 bio, 5 phy sci, 5 verbal- on the MCAT with an O on the writing sample.
