Hey everyone,
Just wondering from any of the upperclassmen on here rotating in NY right now- how important/convenient is it to live close to the hospital that we are working at during 3rd yr? Is it found to be more convenient b/c of certain rotations requiring us to work til late night /early morning hours? I'm trying to decide if should look to live closer (ie: walking distance) or if being a subway ride away is also a do-able option?
thanks! :)

I lived across the street from the hospital during my 3rd year because of the unpredictable hours and so I could just roll of bed for early rotations. However, there's a trade-off. Neighborhoods near some hospitals aren't quite as nice or safe as neighborhoods further away, so you may want to make the decision based on that criteria as well as expense of living in NY.

I lived about 20 min by train from the hospital I was at and found no problems. True its more convenient to be close to the hospital, but considering the time you are there, you just want to get away from there once you are done. can't if you live close by. i wouldn' recommend anything more than 45 min away though. as nyladoo said most areas surrounding the hospital aren't nice areas so that is something to think about too, with the exception of LICH & Methodist

I live with family on long island and commute to Queens every day. No traffic, it takes 26 minutes. With traffic, no less than 45 minutes. I envy those within walking distance to the hospital. There are advantages to living in the suburbs, but It sure would be nice to not have to wake up at 6:30 when I have to be there for 8:30.

I really wanted to be able to walk to work so I chose a clinical center in a nice neighborhood (methodist) - it was really nice and we loved living in Park Slope. I miss it - UWS isn't nearly as nice.

also keep in mind the borough of queens, the rent is generally more expensive than brooklyn, so keep your budget in mind when choosing where to live

Social life in South Brooklyn = non-existent (in my opinion)
For nightlife you're probably gonna end up in trekking to Park Slope, Bay Ridge, etc., if you stick around in BK and to Manhattan a lot as well. Rent is not that cheap in South Brooklyn either. Restaurants are expensive but there isn't much variety. The beaches/boardwalk are probably ok, but I'm not much of a beach person so I can't really judge them. The area is somewhat pretty though in my opinion. Being close to CIH has its advantages, but personally I'd rather live in downtown Brooklyn or Park Slope where you'll have the advantage of accessing virtually any subway line you could ever need.

Live in Park Slope! Yay!
Although, commute to CIH from the slope is a beyotch.
