Could someone please do a quick breakdown of what sub-I and electives are? What order to do them in, how many weeks can be done outside the SGU affiliated hospitals. Has anyone done electives outside the US/Canada/UK? What are the best places to do psychiatry in NY? Is there an official SGU website with this information (that is easy to access)? I get so many errors, without any information.

Thanks again!!

you don't need to log in to access that site it's found on SGU's website not their login page. but if you do log into the member page then on the left there's a link for the SOM Clinical website that has all the info you're looking for.. If you can't log in call the school and ask them why you can't log in.

If you're trying to figure out what the difference is between an elective & a Sub-I, this might help.
A Sub-I is a shorter, more intense version of its 3rd yr counterpart. For example, you complete 12 wks of IM as a 3rd yr but only 4 wks as a 4th yr, you're given the title of Sub-Intern, and are supposed to get (depending on which hospital) more responsibility, greater patient load & more autonomy in managing your patient. Dittos for Surgery sub-I.There are only 3 sub-I's: Peds, Surgery, Medicine. Of these, only Med Sub-I is mandatory for graduation. Most folks choose to do a surg or peds sub-I only if they're applying for these fields. All other 4th yr electives (except psych & maybe FP) fall under the umbrella of one of these 3 majors. For example, anesthesiology is a surgery elective, pulmonary is a medicine elective, and so on.
You can do them in any order you wish, the school doesn't care so long as you finish all the requirements before the deadline.
Best places in NY to do any rotation; one can only give their opinion about the 1 or 2 places they rotated so I don't know if you can get a balanced comparison. I did Forensic Psych at Elmhurst which was great. Gen Psych @ Beth Israel is also very good, great teaching and a lot of pt interaction.
Unaffiliated hospitals: best get this info from the school directly, the website is very vague.I'm posting below info from the site that was giving you an error msg.

Also, if you are thinking about doing away electives, take a look at the institution's website regarding visiting students. University of New Mexico's site has a special section about NM residents who are Caribbean students. Lots of info and answered all my questions.
