... hence why I am interested :D

Hey Everyone

Just thought I would start a thread on PM&R interests, since it kind of seems to be that "lost in space" residency that not many people talk about. I am not a PM&R, but am interested, and would like to connect with those students who are interested. Whether its those that are matched in it, already a resident, or maybe even a first year who has no idea that PM&R actually stands for Procrastinators Meeting & Rescheduling, it would be nice to network a little.

So to start off, anyone have any good/bad experiences with elective rotations in PM&R?

Any particular places that would be good to seek (since the affiliated list for this field is VERY limited)?

For anyone who may be a little further along than end of 3rd year, any suggestions as to programs that have a good taste for IMG's, particularly SGU?

Or, simply, is this a field you're interested in?

I did my PM&R elective in Elmhurst hospital in Queens, NY a few weeks ago. It's a program run from Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in Manhattan with residents rotating through Mt. Sinai and Elmhurst and maybe 1 or 2 other hospital(s). The program is a mix of MDs and DOs. The chief resident told me they've had residents who graduated from Ross and SGU, with one of the recent chiefs being a SGU graduate. I found it to be an OK elective that was informative, especially for a person like me who is going into IM.

So PM&R is basically a medicine field not a surgical one right? I looked through a curriculum of a PM&R residency and it included some surgical rotations early on.

PM&R requires 1 preliminary residency year, so I think you might be referring to a preliminary year in surgery. I personally haven't heard of any PM&R resident doing a surgery prelim year, only an IM prelim. PM&R from my understanding after completing the rotation, was kind of like the medical equivalent to orthopaedic surgery and worked with ortho hand in hand.

PMnR is on the top of my list. I have not statrted clinicals yet, but it is a field that got me really pumped about medicine. As far as good programs, I have a friend thru UMDNJ that is doing her residency there and at the Kessler rehab hosp. I have heard that Kessler is a pretty awesome place. Perhaps you could set up an elective there? I'm looking forward to a career, any career, and as of late i'm thinking pmnr!

Kessler is actually ranked the #2 rehab center in the country! Pretty amazing I'd say... I actually tried to contact Kessler about doing an elective, and was told to contact a lady at UMDNJ. Unfortunately, I soon found out that SGU students cannot do rotations at UMDNJ hospitals/clinics. I suppose it will be just another blind ERAS application there! If anyone is interested, here's the hospitals with PM&R that I've personally come across that will NOT take SGU students for electives (doesn't mean we can't apply for residency there though)-- a work in progress unfortunately:

Univ of South Florida (USF) - Tampa Bay
University of Colorado (UCHSC) - Denver
University of Washington (UW) - Seattle
UMDNJ - Newark

On the positive side, here are some that will (with maybe a hoop or 2 more to jump thru):

JFK - Edison, NJ (affiliated)
Elmhurst - Queens, NY (affiliated)
Medical College of WI (MCW) - Milwaukee
University of Utah - Salt Lake City

I haven't checked any of the Texas hospitals, simply because I want to apply there...

Can anyone add to either list?

that's not true, sgu students have rotated through UMDNJ (Newark at least). This could be dept dependent though and PMR may not do it, but i know people who have done EM and Med sub Is there.

Anyone know the lifestyle of a PM&R Doc? also What kind of scores do people have who match. I was never really interested in the field but when I saw that Kessler offers a Residency I thought why not, because my dad's client is the CEO of Kessler and I remember he got me a summer job as a college student there with just one phone call. I am sure he can do the same for a residency spot as long as I have about average stats. And now that I see how hard it is to match in any sort of specialty i am thinking any inside help i can get can't hurt.

Well, from multiple people both involved and not involved in the field, I've heard the lifestyle is great. You won't be making CT surgery amounts of $$$, or even close, but if having a family and having a life of your own is more important, its right up there with FM. This is a quote from the American Academy of PM&R: "For the most part, the lifestyle of a PM&R resident is quite reasonable and predictable. You can pursue a life outside of the hospital in many cases.." And that's just residency... Of course with everything in medicine, there are those exceptions, but I think you get the point.

If you can can an "in" to Kessler and truly do want to pursue that career, I wouldn't blink. Take advantage of whatever contacts/networking you have... Like I mentioned earlier, it is one of the top rehab centers in the nation, and well-known at that.

Now as far as scores go, my understanding is that the requirement/competitive level isn't too high at most programs... but its important to remember that there aren't that as programs out there as compared to many other fields, and very limited spots at that.

ok cool thanks for the info. I guess I'll have to do an elective to find out if this is for me. I got to admit i didn't enjoy working at kessler during that summer job, it was very depressing and some of the things i had to do weren't too pleasant as well. so i quite it kind of early.
