Hi guys

I'm due to start peds and ob-gyn at flushing soon. I was curious for any input on these rotations, whats expected of us, hours, etc.

Thank you for any advice

Peds is great there. I posted details in a previous post. Scedule is good as well, you choose you own call days.

I don't like to badmouth a program. Some of the attendings are cool. If you are interested in OB, do it somewhere else if possible.

I just finished OB there. I think its a pretty good program. Im not sure what you didnt like about it. The only real complaints I have about it is the lack of a real schedule. You never really know where you are suppossed to be or when your suppossed to be there. But if you can just go with the flow, you will learn a lot. Its broken into OB, GYN and Clinic and you spend 2 weeks in each dept. Just find the residents who like to teach and stick with them. Thats what I did and I ended up learning a lot and getting to do a lot as well. The call schedule sucked for us because there wasnt a lot of students and they expect someone on call everyday except mondays. The call is 24 hrs and on somedays 26 or 27 hrs. Overall its a decent rotation though.

Quick Question, Does anyone who has done Peds at flushing know if its ok to miss a day. I have a wedding back home and will most likely miss one friday. Im gonna tell them as soon as the rotation starts, but I was just curious if anyone else had any experience with this or knew of anyone who missed a day.

You are allowed 2 days absence on each rotation. Just email the attending in charge and let her know.

You are allowed 3 sick days without penalty. Let your attending know and they are usually cool about it. I had a sick day and they had no issues with it. The attendings are really nice and know that stuff happens. By the way...also just know that you need to go there a couple days in advance so that you can get your drug screening test (urine). Flushing Hospital requires it and YOU CAN NOT START without it and it takes a few days to get your results back. Also, AUC will send you orientation info saying for you to go to orientation at Jamaica Hospital, but it NOT THERE (AUC sent me on a wild goose chase my first day...). You have orientation at Flushing. Just giving you a heads up.

THe orientation that is supposed to take place at jamaica is not really an orientation. It was more of a lecture on washing your hands, sexual harassment, and those types of administrative issues. The orientation of the hospital and facilities was given by the lady in charge of the rotations.

Peds at Flushing is great. I was concerned at first bc I hadn't heard too much about it, but all of the residents and attendings are great to work with. 3 weeks inpatient/3 weeks outpatient. Inpatient is from 7:30/8 to 4 (sometimes a little earlier), and outpatient is from 9 to 4/4:30. You have to do 4 calls for each (in/outpatient)-- split into 3 weekday and 1 weekend. Overall, no problems, and if you're into Peds, it's a good program to learn at.

Had my first day of Obgyn at flushing today. Honestly, I learned more in one day at Flushing than I did in six months of medicine/surgery at Wyckoff.
