I think people did well...I got my first choice in anesthesiology, another classmate got orthopedics and a third grabbed up a physical medicine spot. I'm sure more people did well also, just haven't heard from them as of yet.

Stickied! Congrats to our friends to the North!
It would be informative to everyone if we could follow this format for listing match info:
Location: City, Province
Program: Name of Hospital
Field: What type of doc you going to be? :)
Comments: Any other invaluable info you would like to share

WOW.. great showing Saba canadians. That will make 2 years in a row.
The result from SGU are coming in but still not completed. It seems like both schools did well. Good job.

Hi all,
What is the timeline like for applying and getting the CARMS? Is that you first complete med school (2 years on Saba and 2 year clincial rotation), and then apply for residency in Canada? Or can you apply for residency during your 4th year as a med student? What exams do you have to write to qualify for the carms? I know you have to write USMLE 1,2CS CK, 3 to become a dr in the US... for the canadian exams, if there are any to be written prior to CARMS, can you write them while you are a medical student? Or only after you are a Saba graduate?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Kaj

Hi All,
I had a quick question, I was a little confused as for the process of applying for residency. If you apply for residency in Canada is that a different program then the match program in the US? I guess what I am asking is do you fill out a diff. application for the US residencies and fill out another application for the Canadian residencies? Or is it the same program for both residencies?
Also if they are different programs do they communicate or can you put surgery as your number 1 choice for one program and family practise for the other program. or is that not a good idea. Thanks guys. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

I have heard that you cant apply for residency in the states and in Canada at the same time. Can anyone verify that?

sure you can. it's just that you're legally bound to withdraw from one match if you get a spot in the other.

I'm wondering if anyone happens to know and would share with us how many students didn't match in CARMS for this year or years in the past? I wonder what % matched?

Hey congrats to you guys! Just wondering, what is the return of service requirement for those of you that have matched into FM, ortho, anes, etc. Thanks!

If you go to the CaRMS website, go to search and put in 'IMG match 2007', you can get some useful info. Lots of PDFs. If you search: "match results for the IMGs by discipline preference 2007 first iteration PGY-1 match" and go to the last link on that page, you get an overview of the specialties IMGs are getting and how many are applying for them. It doesn't look overly promising, but there is a chance of returning!

What is this return or service? If you get a residency in Canada and are an FMG you have to do something for them? I thought that was only if you did not do your residency in Canada.

Wow! I just checked out the above and it is pretty disheartening! Out of 1486 who entered the match, 1257 did not match in the first iteration!
I know your choice of specialty will affect your chances of getting matched, and your MCCEE score. But what else? I really want to be able to come back to Canada, but this is telling me it's more likely I will not.

I'm just starting in Sept., so I don't know first hand, but I was told by someone (that went to Saba) that got an anesthesiology residency in Canada that your references/write-ups (whatever they're called) from your preceptors are as important, or more, than your test scores. I think they want to know you can do a good job and that you were liked during your rotations.

I was at a Canadian med school interview yesterday, and the admissions officer told us that in Canada/US, to get your residency, it's nearly if not completely based on your performance during rotations and write-ups from preceptors ( as CANKID mentioned ). Your in-class exam scores, as long as you pass, everyone's the same. I don't know if that also applies to foreign meds applying for residency in Can provided that rotations were done in North America.

Overall, the #'s of students who have returned to Canada is so minute that students who are going to the Carib should consider it ... well, you know.
