Great spot. You will be with UMass Med students, and an occassional Tufts anf UNE med student. Medicine has their own residents. Hours are from 7:00 AM until 5:00 pm. you are on call (usually 3-11pm).

Surgery is with Beth Isreal (Harvard) residents. Hours are about 5:30 am until 5 pm. Over night call q4 days.

Ob/Gyn is with UMass residents but I don't know if they are still accepting SMU students.

Tough place but you learning with top notch students. Not the place to be lazy. There were some really good SMU students that went through there and we had a good impression until lately where there a couple of slackers and people are starting notice them (not in a good way). Do whatever is asked of you, Never leave early and act like you want to be there and you will be fine.

I set these up so if you have questions, let me know.

I very much agree with Sin. We can do surgery and IM cores here (I did both). I've heard that we are no longer able to do OB/gyn at St. V's.

Both were great rotations. All of the residents you work with are incredibly bright and most of them do a lot of teaching. The other students are mostly UMass, but some UNE, Tufts, etc.

For IM, you'll be here 7-5 most days (weekdays) and you are on call (admitting patients) q3 days. Call switches between 7am-3pm or 3pm-10pm. Often the 10pm turns into 11pm, 12am or maybe later. You aren't here on weekends except for call and post late call they try to let you go by 1pm. There are almost always 2 conferences every day (sometimes more), and you can really learn a lot if you do a little work in this rotation. You will be expected to present at attending rounds to your residents. You carry 1-5 patients normally (most,ly 2, but I preferred to carry more). You will also often be asked to informally present certain topics during your team meetings with your resident team.

For Surgery, you'll probably be here from abour 5:30am until sometime between 5:30-8pm (normally around 6 or 6:30pm). Call is overnight q4 days (start normal day at 5:30am, ends after rounds/morning conference next day- normally 8am). There is actually a private student call room (if you get to sleep an hour or so). You will mostly do General and Vascular/thoracic surgery, but you can often go in on other cases (eg. ENT, ortho, neurosurg, cardio, urology, plastics). There is M&M monday mornings and gen/vasc conferences tues & wed mornings. You will be asked to present a few times (ppt cases w/ info and current literature) at morning conference for residents/attendings. As previously stated, these residents are from Harvard, so they are top notch. A lot of pimping and teaching.

Other than that, you can do several green electives here. They have a radiology residency, cardio fellowship, GI fellowship. They have some UMass OB residents and Beth Isreal ER residents. There is no neuro residency, but there are UMass students rotating through (which is considered green in a lot of states).

As a final note...my shelf exam grades on IM and surgery were significantly higher than my others and I believe it's because of how much I learned during these rotations. I would highly recommend them. It's great to have these rotations, so please work hard so we can keep them. A huge thanks to Sin for setting these up...

Very helpful info from previous posters. Thank you.

Just curious... is there student housing available for SMU students?

There is actually free housing, but it may or may not be available.
