User can't play nice!
how does this guy keep on getting on here?
HI
If you want to rent I donīt think you should go to a real estate agent - they mostly sell. I think it must be very difficult to find something to rent if one does not know Hungarian. Sometimes the universities can help to find an apartment to rent, but I have heard that it is sometimes more expensive because people then think they can charge a bit more in rent, because all foreigners a rich..., - I donīt know if this is true or not.

I can speak only for Debrecen sorry. The real estate agency is called Enema, and they are HORRIDLY corrupt. The main lady, her name is Szusza, and they specialize in ripping off foreigners and making their renters rich. For instance, I paid almost 4 months deposit, and I didn't get a single PENNY back.
Szusza played these idiotic games with me also. I explained to her that the vacuum cleaner didn't work. She asked for me to give it to her, so that some maintenance guy could take a look at it.
Mind you that I was brand new to this apartment, not even a week into my stay.
She subsequently accused me of putting water into it, and demanded that I paid for it because I broke it.
It is just insane, those real estate agents want to rip you off it is unbelievable. There are not rules and laws like the US or other countries.
It is their rules and their rules only, even if you have a written contract, that means absolutely nothing there, they are out to screw you.
Best bet, is to find someone Hungarian, and go through the local newspaper, and find an apartment on your own near the school.
This is painstaking, but saves ALOT of hassle, because those Hungarian Real Estate agents want to take advantage of you, because they realize that you are somewhat desperate to find an apartment, don't know the language all that well, so they can very EASILY take advantage of you. It is their specialty.
Most people in Hungary are very very nice, except for real estate people.

Is Enema (do they know what that really means? LOL) the only real estate agency in Debrecen? Do students have another choice? Or even if they did, would it be any different?
Thanks

yes that is insane, maybe it has some Hungarian terminology also, ha ha ....
yes unfortunately it is the only real estate agency in town, specializing in stealing money from foreigners.
I would find someone that knows Hungarian, go through the local newspaper, and then ask around, OR you can go to the Theoretical Building at the University, there are almost always several several ads for apartments over there.
I STRONGLY advise AGAINST any local real estate ripoffs in Hungary such as Enema. Szusza will rip you off and you will not even know it.

the school here helps with finding flats..sometimes they are more expensive b/c yes the landlords think rich foreigners. Although they do have some good offers. Your safest bet is to look through newspapers and ask around. Also at the foreign student secretariats' office at the university they have a post wall specifically for flats..these are mostly posted by students who are graduating or moving back home and english speaking landlords. there are i think at least 2 agencies in town here..can't remember their names. Just be careful which ones you choose..i've heard some real horror stories from fellow classmates. Myself i am looking for a new flat but its b/c the place i am staying is too big and a little expensive for just myself and the landlady wanted my rent for the summer all before i left for holiday which i explained financial aide disbursement issues and i could pay partial now and rest when i got back which was a no go...she was really nice...just not willing to go down on the price...haha. well hey hope this helps...
