housing for rotaitions

I'm planning on doing my core rotations in Chicago, New York and in Michigan. Does anybody know how the housing is like in those areas?

michigan has relatively cheap (<600 mo.) housing close to the hospital: there's bloomfield square apartments (http://www.detroit.com/bloomfield-square-apartments-b15837231), bloomfield place apartments, and bloomfield fox point. i recommend the first because free heating, free cable, free water, free parking saves you a ton during the winter time. the third is really close to the hospital (same street) which is useful if you're doing surgery and really cheap (<350 mo.) but not too safe. there are a lot more places near the hospital in the 500-600 range if you sign a 1 year contract, and there is a good year's worth of rotations available in michigan IM=3months, Surg=3months, OB+Family = 3months, + 3 months of electives (whole bunch of IM electives are greenbook here, as well as radiology which i highly recommend)

if you're doing family medicine in chicago, you are likely going to be assigned to a clinic in Joliet, IL. joliet is a really run down place and its hard to find temporary housing. i used craigslist :

as for new york, i stay in parents' basement so no idea what the housing situation is like. many of the people i've rotated with live either in forest hills, queens or in certain areas of brooklyn. make sure you use google maps to find something drivable/subway-acessible to
374 Stockholm St, Brooklyn, NY since most of the NY rotations are at wyckoff.

forgot to mention, unless you have a place in chicago already or like the city for some reason, i don't recommend rotating in both michigan and chicago. chicago only has family medicine (and its a horrible rotation where half the students are supervised by PAs rather than physicians) and michigan has family as well (way better rotation, you work in a real hospital with real residents and real attendings) the only reason i did family in chicago was because we didn't have michigan when i started.

Thanks a lot Sree. One more question: I want to practice FM or IM. Do I still need to do green-book rotations in other specialties, such as surgery, pediatrics, and OB/GYN in order to be licenced to prctice FM or IM in certain states?

It doesn't matter what specialty you go into. You should make a list of five states or so that you're likely to practice in, and look into the requirements of those states.

Everything except family is at SJM-O. Family is at NOMC. The two hospitals are 10 minutes away from each other, connected by the same street. Be careful if you are scheduling Ob/Gyn in Michigan after the second week of May because their accreditation expires in July. They expect to be re-accredited (in a sense, takes too long to explain) but you never know.
