Hi people,
I thank you all for responding to my posts. It is much appreciated.
Question: Does anyone have any recommendations on which of our hospitals in NY or NJ are good to do a medicine Sub-I? Ideally, it would be a place that has a strong residency program and more importantly, I can get a LOR from an attending. Anyone have any suggestions? Anyone have a good experience anywhere?
Thanks in advance.....

St. Mike's in Newark... I heard they treat like a resident and let you do a lot of procedures, plus you see plenty of diverse and interesting cases.

I'm doing mine in St. Mike's right now and I like it a lot. There's a big emphasis on teaching and everyone does teach, especially the residents. Lots of lectures too. You get to handle patients, but they understand you're still a med student and so they don't expect a crazy amount of things. That being said, since it's your Sub-I, they expect you to know a little more than the third year doing his/her core. In terms of procedures, you do get the chance here and there and being the Sub-I you get more of a chance than your core rotation, though this all depends on the residents you are working with. You definitely do see a diverse bunch of cases, and you have a good chance of getting a LOR from the attending. Plus, almost all the residents are SGU grads, so they love us.
Hope that helps.

Hi,
I am hearing that at St. Michael's, a Medicine Sub-I student (all students for that matter) DO NOT spend much time with attendings. Most of their time is spent with their intern or team. Is this true? If it is, how do students manage to get LORs from attendings if attendings don't spend time with students?
Just wondering if I should reconsider doing my Sub-I there.
any help is appreciated.
thanks

A nice med sub I to do is at Coney Island. You'll love it there. Very academic but they don't scut you like other places. And they respect med students. I did all my 3rd and most of 4th year rotations there.
