I'm getting closer to clincial time and I'm just curious what you guys think about the hours required, workload and overall clinical experience, especially compared to the basic science years.

Thank you.

I'm sure this info has been posted before, but I'm too lazy to look right now.

In general, 3rd year has longer hours (your psych, med and peds cores will be only around 40-50 hours per week; but ob-gyn and surgery and be upwards of 80-110 hours per week) however the hours can vary widely amongst different hospitals (especially for ob and surgery).

4th year is mostly electives (some are required electives such as med sub I, peds sub I etc..) and doesnt have as much call, but you will spend alot of time on step 2s and interviews for residency.

here is a comparison of Basic and clinicals

Basic Sci .................................................. ........Clinicals

Sleeping in is OK most of the time........................ Sleeping in = Fail
More studying ......................................Alot of studying + slave work
Bay Shore helps you out..................... You're on your own, (good luck)

Some people like the clinicals more than the islands, just my $.02

Ha! I really disliked my 3rd year. And 4th year almost seemed like a waste of time. Way more liked 1st and 2nd year. Which is why I went into pathology - know thyself.

dunsoon, I definitely agree with your thoughts about 4th year being a waste of time. By the way are you doing residency in path? what hospital? I am applying for path residency.

I think it depends on what hospital you go to as well, because there's a big difference between the NJ hospitals and the NY hospitals. In general, the NY hospitals work you more and expect you to take more call and be at the hospital longer. By contrast, NJ works you too but not for as long and usually let you leave at a reasonable hour because they want you to ready and study. Of course different rotations within different hospitals vary tremendously, but this is what I've noticed. Hope this helps.
